Women’s Basketball Clinches Overtime Win Over Bloomfield College, 68-66

Rindge, N.H. (November 29, 2015) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team surrendered the first seven points of overtime on Sunday afternoon in the Fieldhouse, but would battle back for a 68-66, non-conference win over Bloomfield. In the final minute, junior forward Jasmyne Fogle (Bridgeport, Conn.) hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 66-66, before senior guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) made what would stand as the game-winning layup with 12 seconds to play.

With the win, the Ravens advance 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Norteast-10 Conference, while the Bears head home with a record of 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

A physical first quarter led to the Bloomfield head coach, David Caputo, receiving a technical foul while jawing with the officials. Throughout the 10 minutes both teams remained close in scoring, with the Ravens taking a 15-12 lead by the end of the period, thanks in part to the two free throws off the technical foul.

The Ravens pushed the lead as high as seven (19-12) with quick buckets from senior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) and junior forward Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) to open the second quarter. Junior forward Tianna Smith answered for Bloomfield, and neither team would put together a major scoring run in the second quarter, as Franklin Pierce took a 30-28 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was good a good one for the Bears, they had a 12-3 scoring run early in the period to surge to a 40-33 lead with 5:42 remaining in the quarter. Smith had four points in the run for Bloomfield, while a three-pointer from sophomore guard Jemma Thacker (Aldgate, Australia) was the only answer for the Ravens early on.

A timeout for the Ravens would allow time for a shift in momentum, where Charette was able to put up five points, two of which came on an uncontested layup to make the score 42-39.

On an inbound ball, Gardner able to send a half-court pass to Fogle, who was behind the defense, for an easy layup with eight seconds left in the third.

Going into the fourth quarter the score was 47-43 favoring the Bears, Charette got two early layups, and managed a three-point play in the process, as she began to assert herself at the offensive end of the floor. The quick, five-point burst pulled the Ravens within one point of the Bears (49-48).

Senior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) then sent a pass to Gardner, who was just outside the three-point line and able to sink her shot, pushing the Ravens back to a 51-49 lead with four minutes to go. After Bloomfield split a pair of free throws at the other end, freshman guard Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) hit a shot-clock buzzer-beater on the run on the right side to make the Ravens lead three (53-50).

With a minute-and-a-half on the clock, Smith hit a jumper to change the lead once again. The Ravens would be up for the challenge, and Gardner again hit a three-point shot from the right side to put Franklin Pierce out front, 56-54, with 45 seconds to go.

The Bears fouled Charette in an attempt to get the ball back, and Charette made one of her two shots, putting the Ravens three points ahead with 20 seconds to go (57-54).

Bloomfield called a timeout and advanced the ball to midcourt, looking to draw up a game-tying play. The Bears got Smith and open look from behind the arc on the left side off a screen and she knocked it down with 14 seconds to play to tie the game at 57-57. After Gardner came up empty on a three-pointer at the other end of the floor, the two teams went to overtime.

As overtime got underway, Bloomfield took over the scoring, scoring the first seven points of the extra session. Thacker was able to sink a three-point shot to keep the Ravens in the game, making the Bears run 7-3 for the first two minutes.

With the Bears still leading, 64-60, Charette made a layup and converted the three-point play after getting fouled, which cut the deficit to just one (64-63), with just under two minutes to go. It was the final salvo of the afternoon for Charette, who would foul out of the game seconds later at the other end of the floor.

A Raven turnover allowed the Bears to stretch their lead to three points on a layup by freshman forward Deja McKenzie with 1:15 to play. Folge answered on the next possession, as she able to get the ball from Thacker and hit a three-point shot to tie the game again with just under a minute left in overtime (66-66).

Bloomfield missed a layup which gave Franklin Pierce possession with 38 seconds left. Gardner got the final say in the game with a layup with 12 seconds to play, to push the Ravens above the Bears, 68-66, in overtime.

Leading the scoring for the Ravens in the game was Charette, who got her second double-double of the season, with 28 points and 12 rebounds. She was followed by Gardner, who had 11 points, nine of which came via a trio of three-point shots.

Leading the scoring for the Bears was Smith, also finished with 28 points, followed by senior guard Ariel Wilson, with 10 points.
