Women’s Basketball Sails Past Assumption on Senior Night, 76-60

RINDGE, N.H. (February 23, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team will head into the postseason as the fourth seed in the Northeast Division after a Northeast-10 Conference win over the Assumption Greyhounds on Tuesday night. Sophomore guard Jemma Thacker (Aldgate Australia) went 4-for-4 on three-pointers and senior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) had a game high of 20 points to lead the Ravens to a 76-60 victory in the Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Ravens finish the regular season with a record of 14-12 overall and 11-10 in conference, while Assumption falls to 15-11 overall 11-10 in the NE-10. Both teams have qualified for the Northeast-10 Championship. Franklin Pierce will host the Southwest Division's fifth seed, Adelphi, in a first-round match-up in the Fieldhouse on Friday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m.

Charette was the first to score after Senior Night festivities had concluded on Tuesday night, with a jumper. The Greyhounds were able to keep the game close in the first quarter, with junior guard Kelly Carey splitting two free throws and thinking sinking a three to put Assumption out front for the first time, 9-6, with just under six minutes left in the frame.

Senior guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) followed up the Greyhound points with a three as well, making it 11-9, with the Ravens trailing behind. Later, Thacker sank a triple to close the gap to 15-14 with 2:30 on the board.

The last two minutes were dominated by the Ravens, who went on a 9-2 run with Thacker, Charette and Gardner chipping in two points apiece. Thacker then made moves again, tossing up a three to end the quarter 23-19, with the Ravens out front.

The second started with back-to-back Greyhound buckets, and it was junior forward Jo Impellizeri with the equalizer, making it 23-23. Senior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) hit a triple to push the Ravens ahead with a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way, 28-23.

Charette and junior guard Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.) connected for four points to make it 32-25. Bastian was good for another three with under five to go in the half, but Assumption junior guard Allison Stoddard was right behind her with her own three. Thacker again sent Franklin Pierce further ahead with a buzzer-beater three-pointer, making the score 42-36 going into the second half.

The Ravens owned the start of the third quarter with a 7-0 run, which Charette kicked off with two free throws. Gardner found the backboard for a layup and Campbell fired off a three-pointer, forcing an Assumption timeout, with the score 49-36, Ravens.

Scoring would halt until the five-minute mark, when Assumption senior guard Kelly Conley broke the silence with free throws. Gardner sank a three to answer and followed it up with a three-point play, making it 57-42, with the Ravens on top.

With two minutes to go in the third, Stoddard sank a three to cut into the deficit, but shooting went cold for the Greyhounds for the remainder of the quarter, which ended with the Ravens leading, 61-50.

Thacker hit an early three in the final quarter, but Conley answered back, making it 66-53. Bastian then made a jumper, but Conley again was right behind her with a layup, making it 68-55 with six minutes to go.

Scoring re-started again with four minutes to go, with a layup from Charette. Carey hit a three, but her efforts at a comeback would fall short, as the Greyhounds fell to the Ravens, 76-60.

The Ravens were led by Charette with 20 points, Thacker with 16 points, Bastian with 14 and Gardner with 13, while Charette and Gardner grabbed seven rebounds each. Franklin Pierce shot 50% (24-48) from the field and 90.5% (19-21) from the line, with 29-points off the bench.

The Greyhounds were lead by Impellizeri with 16 points. The team went 37% (20-54) from the field and 80% from the line (16-20).
