Second-Quarter Push Not Enough to Take Down Saint Anselm as Women’s Basketball Falls, 78-70

RINDGE, N.H (February 3, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team outscored Saint Anselm 20-9 in the second half on Tuesday night, but it proved to not be enough, as the Ravens suffered a 78-70 loss to the Hawks in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up in the Fieldhouse.

With the loss, the Ravens fall to an overall record of 11-9 and 8-7 in the Conference, while the Hawks advance to 14-6 overall and 10-5 in the NE-10.

A 6-0 Hawks run to start the game in the first caused a Raven timeout with just over eight minutes to go in the frame. The Hawks' points were scored by junior guard Candace Andrews and freshman forward Samnell Vonlen.

After the timeout, the Ravens out together an 8-5 run, with senior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) kicking it off. Fellow senior, forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) made a three-point play and sophomore guard Jemma Thacker (Aldgate, Australia) sank a three, as Franklin Pierce closed the gap to 11-8. Andrews followed the Raven run with her own triple with four minutes to go, which pushed the Hawks lead back up to 17-8.

With two minutes on the clock in the first, senior guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) took a shot from behind the arc, cutting the Hawks lead to 21-13, and the game would ultimately enter the second quarter with Saint Anselm leading 23-14.

The second quarter started with a 9-0 Raven run, at the hands of Thacker and Charette. Thacker made a classic three-point play, Charette had back-to-back layups and Thacker rounded out the run with an equalizing jumper for the first tie of the game, 23-23.

Saint Anselm junior guard Caitlyn Abela and sophomore guard Ali Glennon connected to break the streak with back-to-back three-point shots, sandwiched around a layup from junior guard Dana Campbell (Merrick, N.Y.), as the Hawks moved in front, 29-25.

In the back half of the quarter, the Ravens were able to find a groove and poured in nine points over the final four minutes. Junior guard Jasmyne Fogle (Bridgeport, Conn.) hit back-to-back jumpers in the final minute, including a buzzer-beater which gave the Ravens the lead at the half, 34-32.

The third quarter started with Bastian sinking a triple to put the Ravens up by five, 37-32.

The Ravens would go silent for the next three minutes however, while Abela and Glennon connected for 11 points in a 14-0 Saint Anselm lead which pushed the Hawks back ahead, 46-37.

Charette cut into the deficit with a jumper at the six-minute mark, but St. Anselm fired back with an 11-4 run and, with a minute to go, the Hawks found their largest lead of the game, at 16 points (59-43). A last-chance effort by Charette sent the Ravens into the final quarter trailing, 59-45.

The fourth started quiet, as the score stood still until 8:28, when Charette made her way to the charity stripe and sank both her shots. Senior forward Raquel Johnson snuck a layup in before the Ravens shot four triples in a row, with Thacker and Bastian matching each other shot-for-shot. Vohlen was the only Hawks player able to get into the paint during the three minute run, as her three-point play and another layup allowed the Hawks to maintain the lead, at 69-59.

With just over a minute to go, Bastian found the backboard for a layup, but Glennon was right behind her with a three. Foul shots for the Hawks left the Ravens trailing 78-67 with seven seconds to go. Gardner would hit a final shot, a buzzer-beater three, but the Ravens still fell, 78-70.

Leading the scoring for the Ravens on Tuesday was Charette with 19 points, with Thacker close behind with 16 points and eight rebounds. Bastian added 15 points and Gardner notched eight rebounds as well. The Ravens shot 46.2% (24-53) from the field and 87.5% (14-16) from the line, while collecting 26 points off the bench.

The Hawks leader, with a double-double, was Vonleh, who piled up 17 points and 10 rebounds. She was followed by Glennon with 19 points and Abela with 15 points. The Hawks shot 49.1% (28-57) from the field and 57.1% (12-21) in free throws.

The Ravens play at home next on Saturday, February 6 at 1:30 p.m. when they host Stonehill.
