Women’s Basketball Stuns Saint Rose, 61-59

RINDGE, N.H (January 16, 2016) -- All at once on Saturday afternoon, the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team extended its own winning streak to seven games, while snapping a Saint Rose winning streak at seven games as well. After a first-quarter Ravens blowout and a Saint Rose second-quarter comeback, the two teams were left with the last two quarters to decide the game. The Ravens took the win in the last 3.1 seconds, as senior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) hit the winning free throws in the Northeast-10 Conference matchup at the Fieldhouse.

The Ravens advance to an overall record of 9-5, and 6-4 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights fall to 11-5, and 6-4 in conference.

The first quarter was quiet from Saint Rose, and featured a 15-0 Raven run for the first eight minutes. Junior forward Alison Palma (Stamford, Conn.) led the scoring with back-to-back buckets. Freshman guard Sarah Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) made a three-point play, followed by senior guard Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn), who took her turn at the line, with two good shots to push the Ravens lead to 9-0 just before the five-minute mark.

After the midpoint of the quarter, the next five points came off free throws, as senior guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) split a pair, and Charette followed with back to back turns at the line, making three of her four three throws, top off the 15-0 run with 2:30 to go.

Senior guard Tyler Hansen broke the Saint Rose silence with a big shot, a three-pointer, while teammate senior forward Keyonae Williams got the last basket of the quarter with a jumper, leaving the Franklin Pierce lead at 15-4 going into the second.

A 22-5 run by Saint Rose over the entirety of the second quarter would turn the game around, as Williams hit an early jumper, followed by Bastian splitting her free throws, making it a 16-6 game. Hansen again broke the scoring silence, after a two minute lapse for Saint Rose, with back-to-back three-pointers. Charette was able to get a shot in between her buckets, though the Golden Knights closed within striking distance for the first time, trailing 18-16.

Junior forward Staci Barrett made a layup to tie the game, 18-18, but a layup by Middleton gave the Ravens the lead right back. With three minutes to go, Hansen received a long pass from teammate Taylor Nazon for an uncontested layup for Saint Rose's first lead of the game, 22-20. Hansen and Barrett got one layup each before the half would end, 26-20, in favor of Saint Rose.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth possession battle, with Charette earning the first three baskets for the Ravens, each one answered immediately by either Barrett or Williams. Middleton chipped in with the next two layups, but Nazon found an opening on an inbounded ball and got a fast-break layup to push the Saint Rose lead to 35-28 with 5:30 to go in the third.

Charette hit another layup to cut the difference to 37-32, but her efforts were met by another Hansen three-pointer for an eight-point Golden Knight lead. With just over two minutes left, Bastian and sophomore guard Jemma Thacker (Aldgate, Australia) connected to close the gap, and junior guard Jasmyne Fogle (Bridgeport, Conn.) had the last basket of the quarter, keeping it a five-point game, 43-38, heading for the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Ravens slowly crept back into the game. Fogle got the ball rolling with a three-pointer early on, which she followed up with a free throw to bring the Ravens within one point, at 45-44. Gardner was right behind her with a layup, which Williams followed up on with one of her own at the other end to keep the Ravens trailing by one, 47-46. Nazon hit a three-pointer to tip Saint Rose further ahead but, after a two-minute scoring lull, Fogle sank a three in transition and Bastian followed with a layup to regain the lead with four minutes to go, 51-50. Saint Rose would not go away easily, as Barrett scored the game's next five points, on two layups and a free throw. Charette answered with a free throw for the Ravens, who now trailed by three points, 55-52.

The Ravens went on the steal the ball, Charette got fouled again and, with two good shots, left Franklin Pierce down by one, 55-54. Williams put a layup in for Saint Rose, but Gardner sank a crucial three-pointer from the right side with 1:30 to go to tie it up, 57-57.

After hauling in a defensive rebound, Thacker gave the Ravens the lead at the other end of the floor, dipping, ducking and dodging around her defender in the low post to make it 59-57 with a layup.

Nazon wasted no time to re-tie the game with 27 seconds remaining, but a hard foul on Charette with 3.1 seconds to go would finally decide the game. She hit both free throws with ease and the Ravens took the conference win, 61-59.

Leading the Ravens in scoring was Charette with 18 points, while Fogle, Bastian and Middleton all added nine points each. The Ravens shot 37.5% (21-56) in the field, went 16-21 from the line (76.2%), finished with 34 points in the paint and collected 14points off Golden Knight turnovers.

Saint Rose recorded one double-double, as Barrett had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Nazon followed with 11-points, Williams added 10 and Hansen led the way with 15. The Golden Knights shot 41.1% (23-56) from the floor and 72.7% (8-11) from the line, while collecting 32 points in the paint and 22 off the bench.

The Ravens return home on January 23 at 1:30 p.m. when they play host to Southern Connecticut State University.
