Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Southern Connecticut, 71-63

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January 24, 2015) – Although three were in double digits Saturday afternoon, the Franklin Pierce women's basketball team came up short against Southern Connecticut  71-63 at the Moore Fieldhouse in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, the Ravens fall 10-5 overall, with an 8-4 record in Northeast-10 play. Southern Connecticut advances to 11-9 in overall play, and 8-4 in Northeast-10 play.

The Owls dominated the first half with their largest lead in the first half at 14:17, 16-6. However, the Ravens cut into their lead with junior Dyamond Gardner 's (Cambridge, Mass.) layup bringing the game within two, 16-14, with just over 12 minutes to play.

Once again, the Owls would pull away again at the 10 minute mark, 25-16, but the Ravens continued to battle back bringing the game within three with 6:28 left in the first half, 27-24. The game would remain within three until a three-pointer by Sophomore Taylor McLaughlin, 35-29, with 2:55 on the clock in the first half. 

Junior Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) had the last basket of the first half at 1:23 bringing the game within six points 37-31, each team would remain scoreless for the remainder of the half. 

Charette netted 13 points in the first half, while junior Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) grabbed six rebounds, with Gardner grabbing 5. Owls senior Mariah Hankton contributed 10 points in the first half to the Owls lead.

Graduate student Kate McDonald (Fall River, Mass.) started the second half with a three pointer within the first 15 seconds, 37-34. By 15:02 the Ravens gained the lead with Gardner's layup, 44-43. But McLaughlin regained the Owls advantage with six consecutive points.

With 12:23 left in the game, sophomore Jasmyne Fogel (Bridgeport, Conn.) tied the game 48-48 with her layup, this would be the closest the Ravens came to regaining the lead for the remainder of the game. The Ravens would fall 71-63 to the Owls.

Senior Mariah Hankton had 20 points and eight rebounds, followed by Taylor McLaughlin with 12 points and three rebounds. Freshman Chandler Williams contributed 11 points.

Kara Charette netted 18 points and three rebounds. Graduate student Jessica Hurd (Kegworth, England) and Dyamond Gardner each had 13 points, with Gardner grabbing eight rebounds and seven assists.

The Ravens travel to New York on Tuesday to face Adelphi University to face the Panthers in Northeast- Conference play at  5:30.
