Women's Basketball Upsets New Haven in 62-59 Win

RINDGE, NH (January 17, 2014)- With 1:30 left in the game, a layup by junior Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) would secure the lead for the Franklin Pierce women's basketball team during the nail biter Saturday afternoon at The Fieldhouse. Junior Kara Charette's (Fairhaven, Mass) double-double aided in the 62-59 victory to dissolve New Haven's seven game winning-streak.

The Ravens advance to 7-3 in Northeast-10 play, with 9-4 overall, while New Haven drops to 7-3 in Conference play, with a 13-3 record.

The lead would change 11 times in the first half, with the largest lead being five points, 11-6, held by New Haven at the 12:39 mark in the first half.  Senior Rykema Stone tied the game to 27-27  at 2:55 in the first,  followed by a three by sophomore Sade King  to give the Chargers the lead. However, the teams would end the half tied up 30-30 with a three point play by Charette at the 12 second mark.

Charette had 15 points in the first half alone, shooting 100% from the free throw line, while grabbing seven rebounds. Junior Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) tallied four assists.

Graduate student Jessica Hurd (Kegworth, England) would tie the game up 34-34 with a jumper at 17:19, followed by another jumper not even a minute later to give the Ravens the lead. A jumper by junior Lauren Hebert  at 12:46 would give the Chargers a short-lived one point lead since Hurd would answer back with a layup to return the advantage back to the Ravens.

Freshman Jemma Thacker (Aldgate, Australia) banged a three to increase the lead to four points, but a minute later Cruso scored a three for the Crusaders to bring it back to a one point game, 47-46 by 10:05. Graduate student Kate McDonald 's (Fall River, Mass.) three gave the Ravens the largest lead of the game at the 7:49 mark, 54-48.

58-58 was the score after senior Aquillin Hayes tied the game up at 2:34, followed by a free throw at 1:54 to give the Chargers a one point advantage. Bastian's layup at the 1:30 mark secured the lead for the Ravens for the remainder of the game.  Franklin Pierce put an end to the Chargers' winning streak with their 62-59 victory.

Aquillin Hayes had 19 points with six rebounds, four assists, with two blocks to lead the Chargers. Elizabeth Cruso added 11 points with four assists.  India Dotson grabbed 10 rebounds while posting eight points with four blocks.

Kara Charette posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, with two assists and a steal. Jessica Hurd posted 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks, while Dyamond Gardner had six rebounds with eight assists and two steals.

The Ravens return to The Fieldhouse on Wednesday at 5:30 pm to take on Pace in conference play.
