Charette’s 26 Points Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to Saint Rose, 58-56

ALBANY, N.Y. (January 10,2015) – Junior forward Kara Charette's (Fairhaven, Mass.) 26 points were not enough for the Franklin Pierce women's basketball team to hold off Saint Rose in Saturday afternoon's contest at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Ravens came from behind to tie in the last minute of the game, but fell 58-56.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce drop to 6-3 in Northeast-10 play, 8-4 overall. Saint Rose 14-16, advances to 3-6 in Northeast-10 play, and advance their overall record to 6-8.

The game was started with a three-pointer by graduate student Kate McDonald (Fall River, Mass.). By 17:01 the game was tied 7-7. Neither team would tack points to the scoreboard until 13:44, with a layup by junior Nicole Bini, but Charette would tie it up 11-11 seconds later.

Although taking the lead, briefly at 10:34, the Ravens would not hold the lead for the rest of the game. Saint Rose would begin to pull away with a layup by junior Keyontae Williams at 9:16. The Ravens would begin to chip away at the deficit, but the teams would head to the locker room with Saint Rose leading 29-23.

With 14:32 left in the game, Saint Rose lead by 16, 41-25, but the Ravens would fight back. Freshman Diondra Woumn (Lynn, Mass.) would bring the deficit to single digits, 43-35.

Saint Rose again pushed the lead to 10 points at 4:30 with a layup, but junior Natalie Bastian (Branford, Conn.) netted a three, lessening the Golden Knight lead to seven, 54-47.

With under a minute to play, Bastian would tie the game up 56-56 on a free throw. Five seconds to play, sophomore Staci Barrett's jumper would reclaim the lead for Saint Rose. The Ravens would call a timeout with three seconds to play to draw up a play, going to Charette one more time, but her buzzer shot wouldn't go. Saint Rose would tally the win 58-56.

Senior Jamie Hutcheson had a double-double with 19 points on the board with 10 rebounds. Senior Mariah Lesure and Staci Barrett would each have 12 points, with five rebounds and six blocks, and three rebounds with four assists respectively.

Kara Charette netted 26 points with five rebounds, with the next high scoring Raven juniorDyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) posted eight points, with six rebounds. Graduate student Jessica Hurd (Kegworth, England) had six points, six rebounds, and one block, while Natalie Bastian also had six points with three rebounds and four steals.

The Ravens return to play Saturday, January 17, to face New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Fieldhouse.
