Kara Charette Hits 1000 Points as Women’s Basketball Falls to Queens College in Second Half

Colchester, Vt. (November 15, 2014)
–Junior forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) led all scorers with 28 points, joined the 1,000-point club, and had a double-double, but could not help the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team defeat Queens (N.Y.) College in their final game at the Double Tree Tip Off Classic hosted by Saint Michael's College. Queens sophomore Madison Rowland also posted a double-double, to aide in the 61-59 victory at the Ross Sports Center Saturday afternoon.

The Ravens fall to 1-1 in non-conference play, while Queens advances to 1-1.

Queens started the game off strong, but Charette's layup off freshman Jemma Thacker's (Aldgate, Australia) assist at 17:06 tied the game up 7-7. Senior Dyamond Gardner's (Cambridge, Mass.) 3-pointer at 15:30 would bring the Ravens to a one point lead, 10-9, until junior Mackenzie Rowland's fast break layup off a steal at 10:27 tying it up to 16-16. Charette's three point play at 9:08 would bring the score to 21-19.

The game was tied once more in the first half with a 3-pointer by Queens junior Joya McFarland at 4:28. Junior Natalie Bastian's (Branford, Conn.) free throws at 4:06 would hold the Raven lead for the remainder of the first half. Senior Jessica Hurd (Kegworth, England) posted six rebounds, out of her 14 total, in the first half.

The Ravens were ahead by the end of the first half, 36-32 and they would hold the lead until the 8:49 mark.

Madison Rowland's layup at 18:30 would bring the game within two points, 36-34, but a 10 point rally by Charette and Bastian brought the Ravens to a 48-34 lead by 15:01. Freshman Taylor Miller's three point play brought the Knights back to a single digit deficit by 12:19.

A steal by Madison Rowland at 10:43, leading to a fast break layup by junior Kristen Korzevinski, would bring the game within two points to 51-49. Bastian's foul shots with 10:04 to play pushed the Ravens lead to 53-49, but it would be the largest lead the team had the rest of the way.

Madison Rowland cut into the lead immediately with a jumper on the next play, before Korzevinski's steal and layup tied the game, 53-53, with 8:49 remaining. Ravens senior, Gardner would sink two free throws at 8:27 to regain the lead, 55-53. Madison Rowland's free throws seconds later would tie the game and Korzevinski's foul shot at 6:22 would seal the lead for the remainder of the game for the Knights.

In addition to her seven assists, Madison Rowland posted a double-double with 10 rebounds and 21 points. Mackenzie Rowland posted 11 points to aide in the win.

Kara Charette's 28 points not only gave her a double-double with 10 rebounds, it also welcomed her into the 1000-point club. Natalie Bastian posted 13 points, and Jessica Hurd posted 14 rebounds and four assists.
