Five Double-Figure Scorers Lead Women's Basketball to 89-68 Win over Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. (December 13, 2013) – Senior guard Brittany Martelle (Brookfield, Conn.) netted a career-high 28 points, and four other Ravens logged double-figures in scoring Friday afternoon to pace the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team to an 89-68 win over Caldwell at Newman Center in Caldwell, N.J.

The Ravens won for the second time in their last three games to improve to 5-6 overall, while the Cougars fell to 3-6.

Martelle was 12-of-15 from the field, including a 3-for-5 clip from beyond the arc. She scored eight points on a pair of triples and a layup during a run by Franklin Pierce to open the second half and turn a slim six-point lead into a commanding 61-43 advantage with 14:09 remaining in the game.

She scored seven-consecutive points minutes later to keep Caldwell at bay, an eventually tossed in 21 for the half (9-of-10 shooting) as the Ravens were never threatened by the Cougars after the stanza's initial surge.

Sophomore guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) posted an all-around solid game of 17 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, while teaming up with Martelle to highlight Franklin Pierce's offensive outburst in the second half which saw it outscore the Cougars 46-31.

Gardner pumped in 10 points during the final 20 minutes, including a pair of three's in the opening stages of the frame to go along with Martelle's long-range bombs to put the Ravens up by 18.

Junior center Jessica Hurd (Kegworth, England) had 12 points for the game, and rounded out the second half scoring trio with 10 points herself.

Senior guard Brooke Coderre (Woonsocket, R.I.) and sophomore forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) were Franklin Pierce's other double-digit scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Coderre was 5-of-6 shooting, while collecting seven rebounds, blocking three shots, dishing out two assists and swiping a steal. Charette added six rebounds and three assists.

Those five double-figure scorers guided the Ravens to a blistering 65 percent shooting from the field, including a 75 percent mark from three-point range (9-of-12). Caldwell, meanwhile, struggled offensively shooting just 35 percent from the floor and from downtown.

Franklin Pierce jumped out to a commanding advantage early in the game by scoring 15 of the first 18 points, capped by back-to-back layups from Gardner.

The Ravens continued to keep their lead around the double-figure mark for most of the half, and Coderre's triple with 4:22 left in it staked them to a 34-21 edge. Charette hit a layup minutes later to keep the margin at 13 at 40-27, but Caldwell capped the stanza with 10 of the last 13 points to get within six at 43-37.

The Ravens, however, made sure Caldwell's closing surge was just a mirage, as they stormed out of the gates in the second half with the 18-6 rally.

Friday's game capped the first half of the regular season for the Ravens, as they will open up the second half of their campaign on Jan. 5, when they play host to NYIT in Rindge.
