Women's Basketball Pulls Away in Second Half for 57-46 Win at Saint Anselm

All eight Ravens that played scored in the game

MANCHESTER, N.H. (December 1, 2012) -- Senior forward Amanda Saab (Windham, N.H.) dropped in a game-high 18 points to lead the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team to a 57-46 triumph over Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym in Manchester, N.H. The Ravens won their second straight to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Northeast-10, while the Hawks dipped to 3-4 and 0-4 in league play.

Saab's 18 points came on a solid 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, as she also had five rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal.

Senior guard Tiffany Johnson (St. Albans, Vt.) and freshman forward Kara Charette (Fairhaven, Mass.) each chipped in with 10 points and six boards. Johnson also collected a pair of steals, while Charette scored in double-figures for the sixth-straight game to open the season and her collegiate career.

The Ravens shot a strong 51 percent (22-of-43) from the field and held an impressive 34-16 edge in points in the paint. They limited St. A's to just a 35 percent clip (15-of-43) shooting, as Briana Jones netted 11 points to pace the Hawks attack.

The first half was a back and forth affair, but the second half was all Ravens as they pulled away midway through the frame to pick up the double-digit victory.

Franklin Pierce separated itself with an 8-0 run over a three-minute span to go from a slim four-point lead to a commanding 45-33 advantage with 7:37 remaining. Sophomore guard Dyamond Gardner (Cambridge, Mass.) sparked the surge with a layup and Saab aided it with four points, including a three-point play on a layup and free throw.

The Ravens also came up big on the defensive end during the rally as they forced Saint Anselm into a pair of shot clock violations.

A Charette free throw with 2:53 left pushed the lead out to 13 at 54-41 as the Ravens cruised in for the victory.

All eight Ravens that played in the game scored, including getting eight points from Gardner off the bench. She also provided a nice spark on the glass with three rebounds and defensively with a trio of thefts.

The first half featured seven ties and six lead changes. Saint Anselm raced out to a quick 14-8 lead a little more than six minutes into the contest as Ashley Viselli laid in a basket. The Ravens, though, responded by scoring nine of the next 11 points, to take a 17-16 advantage with 7:40 left in the half. Saab kick-started the run with three-pointer from the left wing and capped it with a three-point play on a layup and foul shot.

It was Saint Anselm's turn to make their run in the closing minutes of the first half as the Hawks scored five of the last seven points in the frame to take a 26-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Franklin Pierce returns to action Tuesday night when the Ravens travel to Waltham, Mass. to take on Bentley at 5:30 p.m. in the Dana Center.
