Ravens Drop Extra Inning Affair to Greyhounds

WORCESTER, Mass.  (April 27, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University softball team hung in there with host Assumption College on Thursday and fell 1-0 in extra frames during a Northeast-10 Conference single game on Marois Field. With the win, the Greyhounds move to 17-13, 13-5 NE10 and the loss was the 29th on the year for the Crimson and Grey and the 19th in league play.

Raven starting pitcher Amelia Mamone (Wynantskill, N.Y.) was the tough luck loser as she hurled a complete game scattering seven hits and striking out four batters. Kendal Roy improved to 12-7 on the year with an inning in relief.

The Raven offense was led by a duo of two hit performances by center fielder Jillian Ostrander (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) and shortstop Jaclyn Cortese (Upton, Mass.). Assumption right fielder Julia Mazzeo went 2-for-3 with the lone RBI.

Franklin Pierce threatened to score in the top half of the second when they put runners at the corners on a walk, a Cortese single to second and a fielder's choice. Senior third basemen Mikaela Ballmer (Birdsboro, Pa.) ended the threat by grounding out to short.

With the game still scoreless heading into the sixth, the Ravens began the frame with an Ostrander single up the middle. Her aggressiveness on the base path didn't pay off as she was caught stealing for out number one. Catcher Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) followed by stroking a one out base knock to left, but she was retired at second on a fielder's choice. Assumption starter Jurnee Serating-Ware tap-danced out of danger by inducing a fly out to right to end the inning.

Assumption struggled throughout the contest and only moved runners into scoring position three times until they broke through in the bottom of the eighth with four straight singles, the final one bagger of the walk-off variety off the bat of Mazzeo to send the Greyhounds home victorious.

The Ravens will end their season with a three-game weekend series starting Friday with a single contest versus NE10 opponent Merrimack at 3:00 p.m.
