Softball Falls to Stonehill in Season Finale, 10-3

RINDGE, N.H. (April 24, 2016) -- Three runs were not enough to stump the Stonehill Skyhawks on Sunday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University softball team lost in a Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast Division showdown against the Skyhawks, 10-3.

With the loss, the Ravens conclude their season at to 15-22 (10-13 Northeast-10, 9-12 Northeast Division), while the Skyhawks advance to 23-16 (19-8 Northeast-10, 15-6 Northeast Division).

The hits started early for the Skyhawks. Their two first runs came in the bottom of the first inning, after a sacrifice fly and a deep double to give them an early lead of 2-0. The next score would come from Stonehill in the top of the second, after a triple sent in another run to make it 3-0.

The top of the third and fourth resulted in four more runs for Stonehill. A double and a single sent in three of the four runs for Stonehill. A sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth resulted in the seventh run for Stonehill, giving the Skyhawks a 7-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Ravens offense sparked some life, after sophomore right fielder Jaclyn Cortese (Upton, Mass.) grounded out to first to send sophomore leftfielder Abbigael Cook (Greenville, R.I.) home. Senior catcher Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) would double moments later to send in senior third baseman Erin Wood (Dover, N.Y.), making the score 7-2.

Three more scores for the Skyhawks came in the top fifth, on a pair of singles.

The Ravens would score the final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, after senior shortstop Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y.) singled, sending in senior second baseman Melissa Morgan (Clifton Park, N.Y.) to score, resulting in the 10-3 final.

Junior pitcher Sarah Ropiak got her twelfth win of the season (12-8), as she allowed seven hits and three runs over the first 5.2 innings.

Senior pitcher Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) took the loss in the final start of her career (6-9), after allowing seven hits and six runs (five earned) in 2.1 innings.
