Softball Blanks New Haven, 2-0, then Blanked, 9-0 (5 inn.) in DH Split

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (April 20, 2016) – Freshman Madison Ryan (Dracut, Mass.) and sophomore right fielder Jaclyn Cortese (Upton, Mass.) drove in runs in game one of a doubleheader showdown on the road at the University of New Haven to lead to a 2-0 win for the Franklin Pierce University softball team. Later on, in game two, the Ravens four hits were not enough to overcome the nine runs scored by the Chargers in a 9-0, five-inning defeat at UNH Softball Field.

With the split, the Ravens record moves to 15-19 (10-10 Northeast-10), while New Haven moves to 22-12 (10-9 Northeast-10).

In game one, all it took was a pair of singles by the Raven offense and a three-hit shutout by senior pitcher Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and freshman pitcher Abbie Paquette (Biddeford, Maine) to claim the victory.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth. Hits by sophomore center fielder Cassidy Sorenson (Billerica, Mass.) and senior third baseman Erin Wood (Dover, N.Y.) put both on base to give the Ravens a shot at scoring. Cortese's single to left field resulted in one run for the inning, giving the team a 1-0 lead.

The next and final score for the Ravens came in the top of the seventh, on a single by Ryan.

Senior pitcher Nicole King had her seventh loss of the season (7-7), as she allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, walked four and struck out 10 in a complete-game effort.

Adee (6-7) pitched strong through the first four innings without allowing the Chargers to score. Paquette earned her first save of the season as well, after coming in for Adee and firing three scoreless, hitless innings.

Game two resulted in the Chargers offense coming out strong. In the first inning, the Chargers scored five of their nine runs, after a pair of singles loaded the bases, with only one out. A fielder's choice led to one of the five runs. Shortly after, a double to left-center resulted in two more runs batted in for the Chargers. A throwing error at third base sent two more Chargers home, resulting in an early 5-0 lead for New Haven.

New Haven would score four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A walk and two singles resulted in the Chargers loading the bases once again. A single to center field by freshman left fielder Sierra Cardenales resulted in the first two runs of the inning. Her single was followed by a double from teammate and sophomore right fielder Tori Schiebe to send in two more runs for the Chargers, making the final score 9-0 after five innings.

Senior pitcher Victoria Cabral got her 15th win of the season (15-5), after having five strikeouts and allowing only four hits in the game.

Paquette's record went to 1-1 with the loss, after giving up five runs, three of them earned, in an inning of work. Sophomore pitcher Aubrey Bianco (Marlboro, N.Y.) came in for the final three innings, allowing six hits and giving up four runs.

The Ravens return to the field on Friday, April 22, when they return home to host Stonehill in a Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast Division contest. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at the Bisaccia Softball Complex in Rindge.
