Softball Thunders to Sweep at Saint Anselm, 9-2 and 11-2 (5 inn.)

MANCHESTER, N.H (April 14, 2016) – The bats of the Franklin Pierce University softball team came alive in a big way on Thursday afternoon, led by a pair of home runs by senior third baseman Erin Wood (Dover, N.Y.), as the Ravens posted a 9-2 win over the Saint Anselm Hawks on the road on Thursday afternoon. Later in the day, Franklin Pierce completed its second straight doubleheader sweep with an 11-2 victory.

With this wins the Ravens have now won four in a row and their record improves to 9-16 (5-8 Northeast-10, 5-8 Northeast Division). The two losses for the Hawks dropped their record to 9-21 (5-12 Northeast-10, 4-9 Northeast Division).

In the first game of the day, the bats were strong for the Franklin Pierce offense. In the first inning, a three-run homer by sophomore centerfielder Cassidy Sorenson (Billerica, Mass.) got the Ravens off to a quick, 3-0 lead.

After both teams went scoreless in the second, the Ravens offense came out strong once again in the top of the third. Wood homered down the left-field line to send in another two runs and give the Ravens a 5-0 lead.

Both teams scored in the fourth inning. The Ravens got one more run when sophomore right fielder Jaclyn Cortese (Upton, Mass.) hit a solo shot to left field. Franklin Pierce's one run was answered by two from the Hawks, on a two-run home run by third baseman Julie LeClair.

With the score 6-2 in the top of the fifth, three more runs came in for the Ravens, starting with a pair of doubles from freshman Madison Ryan (Dracut, Mass.) and sophomore second baseman Samantha Bonvino (Milford, Mass.). Another home run by Wood followed as the Ravens made the final score 9-2.

Senior pitcher Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) earned her second win of the season (2-7) after having one strikeout and allowing only two runs over her complete-game effort.

Freshman pitcher Arika Brochu (6-8) allowed three earned runs and gave up a total of four hits over the first 2.2 innings while taking the loss.

Both teams went scoreless throughout the first and second inning in the second game, but got the offense going in the third. Two runs were brought in during the top of the third by Franklin Pierce, as a single by senior shortstop Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y.) sent sophomore first baseman Aubrey Bianco (Marlboro, N.Y.) home. A bases-loaded single by Sorenson sent another run in to give the Ravens a 2-0 lead. The Hawks answered the Ravens two runs with one of their own after a fielding error in the bottom half of the inning.

Another run was scored by Franklin Pierce in the top of the fourth, after a sacrifice fly sent freshman catcher Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) home to take a 3-1 lead.

The offense came to life for Franklin Pierce again in the top of the fifth inning, when a total of eight runs were scored. A two-run homer by Cortese started the hitting streak for the Ravens. With two outs, the home run was followed by three singles, which loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, Bonvino tripled to right field sending in three more runs for Franklin Pierce to make the score 8-1. A pair of singles by Caputo and Sorenson sent in another pair of runs for the Ravens. Finally, a double by Wood sent in the 11th and final run of the game for the Ravens.

The Hawks would score one more time in the bottom of the fifth, however it was not enough to prevent the eight-run rule and the 11-2 Ravens victory.

Freshman pitcher Sabrina LoMonaco (Franklin, Mass.) earned her first win of the season (1-6) after striking out two and allowing only four hits throughout the entire game.

In her second game of the day, Brochu (6-9) had three strikeouts and gave up 11 runs on 13 hits in the complete-game loss.
