Softball Shutout by Assumption, 8-0 (6 innings)

RINDGE, N.H. (March 31, 2016) -- A four-run third inning would be all Assumption needed on Thursday afternoon against the Franklin Pierce University softball team at the Bisaccia Softball Complex. The Greyhounds would add three more in the fifth and one in the sixth to invoke the eight-run rule and post an 8-0, shutout victory over the Ravens.

With this loss, the Ravens fall to 5-13 (1-5 Northeast-10, 1-5 Northeast Division), while the Greyhounds advance to 8-16 (5-7 Northeast-10, 5-3 Northeast Division).

After going scoreless in the first two innings, the Greyhounds came alive in the top of the third to score four runs. After a single by freshman left fielder Caitlin Mirabell drove in one run, teammate and sophomore first basemen Stephanie Menard hit a three-run home run to put the Greyhounds up 4-0.

A double by senior catcher Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Ravens to show signs of life and provided hope of a response. However, she was stranded on second base after sophomore left fielder Jill Ostrander (Glens Falls, N.Y.) popped up to the shortstop.

The bats were strong again for the Greyhounds in the top of the fifth, with a double by Menard driving in teammate and senior shortstop Kayli Moniz. Another run was scored on a passed ball, and then a single by junior catcher Cassie Schultz sent Moniz home to put the Greyhounds up 7-0.

After an error in the top of the sixth, Assumption gained another run to put the Greyhounds ahead, 8-0. A single by sophomore Alex Haskell knocked in the eighth and final run of the game.

Sophomore pitcher Kendal Roy pitched a complete game, striking out five and only allowing three hits to her seventh win (7-4) and second shutout of the season.

Senior pitcher Amanda Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) had two strikeouts and allowed seven runs on nine hits over the first four-plus innings while taking the loss (0-6). Freshman Abbie Paquette (Biddeford, Maine) came on to relieve Adee, gave up only one run and four hits and struck out two.

The Ravens will be on their home field again on Saturday, April 2, for a doubleheader against Le Moyne College starting at noon.
