Softball Splits in Florida Again, Downs MSU Moorhead (3-2), Falls to No. 15 Caldwell (5-3)

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 14, 2016) -- Senior right-hander Tricia Hansen's (Mansfield, Mass.) complete-game six-hitter helped lead the Franklin Pierce University softball team to a 3-2 victory over Minnesota State Moorhead on Monday afternoon at Hancock Park. Earlier in the day, Franklin Pierce fell to No. 15 nationally ranked Caldwell for the second straight day, in a 5-3 loss.

With the split, Franklin Pierce's record now stands at 2-4. MSU Moorhead fell to 4-7 with the loss, while Caldwell improved to 4-3.

The offense came alive for Moorhead in the second inning, as Hansen gave up a solo home run to junior Kristina Villalobos. With the score now 1-0, Moorhead senior right-hander Kristen Nordby would retire the Ravens in order in the bottom of the second to keep the Dragons out front for the time being.

After keeping Moorhead scoreless in the top of the third, Franklin Pierce's offense came to life in its next at bat. Sophomore left fielder Jillian Ostrander (Glens Falls, N.Y.) began the bottom of the third with a single to left field. A sacrifice bunt by freshman designated player Ashley Deyo (Dover, N.H.) advanced Ostrander to second. After an error in right field, Ostrander scored and sophomore second baseman Samantha Bonvino (Milford, Mass.) was now on base. The hits kept on coming for Franklin Pierce, as Hansen got on base on a bunt to advance Bonvino and, moments later, senior shortstop Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y.) singled to send Bonvino home.

With the score now 2-1 the Ravens continued to score after loading the bases with a walk by Nordby. Sophomore center fielder Cassidy Sorenson (Billerica, Mass.) hit a single to send Hansen home and put the Ravens ahead, 3-1.

After both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning, the offense for Moorhead was sparked once again in the top of the fifth. After an error by senior third baseman Erin Wood (Dover, N.Y.), freshman third baseman Morgan Anderson got on base. She then advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by junior right fielder Hannah Klug. Anderson then scored Moorhead's second run of the game after reaching home plate on a single by junior center fielder Carly Williamson.

The Raven defense came out strong after the second and final run was scored, as Williamson was caught stealing third and junior infielder Jill Fox flied out to leftfield. Both teams went scoreless for the rest of the game, resulting in a 3-2 win for Franklin Pierce.

In the circle, Hansen (2-1) went the distance for the Ravens for the second straight day. Over seven innings, she allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, did not issue a walk and struck out three.

For Moorhead, Nordby (3-2) logged the first 2.1 innings. She surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits, walked one and struck out two in the losing effort.

Earlier in the day, both Caldwell and Franklin Pierce went scoreless through the first inning. However, at the top of the second, Cortese and senior catcher Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) got the offense going after a single and a double put them both on base and in scoring position. Ostrander followed and hit a fly ball to center field, but an error by the Cougars allowed both Cahill and Cortese to score to put the Ravens up, 2-0.

Caldwell would answer those two runs with one of their own in the bottom of the inning, after a double by senior shortstop Megan Fryday started the inning and she advanced to third on a flyout. Teammate and junior left fielder Gracie Sullivan, after being walked, tried to steal to second, however was caught and thrown out. The throw to retire Sullivan allowed Fryday to steal home and cut the deficit in half, as the Cougars successfully ran their first-and-third play.

The Ravens would go scoreless in the third, while Caldwell would score another two runs. A sac fly by senior second baseman Caitlin McCready would allow junior center fielder Amy Hickman to score, after she had singled and advanced to third on an errant throw by Cahill. Another error by the Franklin Pierce defense would allow senior first baseman Brielle Reighn to score for Caldwell to put the Cougars ahead, 3-2.

Franklin Pierce would score once more in the game in the top of the fifth inning, when Wood doubled to send Hansen home, after she had stolen second earlier to put herself in scoring position. With the game tied at three the Cougars would come back to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to push themselves over the Ravens in a 5-3 victory. Back-to-back doubles by Sullivan and freshman third baseman Hannah Polak opened the inning, with the latter driving in the former. Polak would later come around to score while Hickman reached on an error.

Senior right-hander Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) took the ball in the second game for the Ravens. She went the distance and allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings, walking five and striking out one while taking the loss (0-2).

On the other side of the ledger, junior right-hander Sydney Ponto (1-3) fired a complete game for Caldwell. She allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits, walked three and struck out four on the way to the win.

After an off day, the Ravens return to the field with two neutral-site, non-conference games in the Sunshine State on Wednesday, March 16, as they continue their 12-game Florida trip. Franklin Pierce is slated to face St. Thomas Aquinas at 9 a.m. and Bemidji State at 11 a.m.
