Sorenson’s big offensive day bolsters softball to doubleheader sweep at Saint Michael’s

COLCHESTER, Vt. (April 23, 2015) - Freshman Cassidy Sorenson (Billerica, Mass.) collected six hits in two games, including four RBI with two home runs and two doubles in leading the Franklin Pierce University Ravens softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights by final scores of 6-0 in game one and 18-5 in six innings in game two at Doc Jacobs Field.

With the wins, the Ravens improve to 7-17 overall (7-14 Northeast-10), while the Purple Knights fall to 2-26 overall (2-16 Northeast-10) on the season.

Game one seemed to shape up as a pitching duel, as the game remained scoreless through the first five innings. Junior Tricia Hansen (Mansfield, Mass.) and Danielle Brown each tossed a scoreless five innings, before Franklin Pierce finally broke through in the top of the sixth.

Graduate student Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) started off the sixth inning with a double, followed by a single by junior Erin Wood (Dover Plains, N.Y.). Then with one out, junior Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) delivered a single to score both Wiley and Wood to grab the 2-0 lead.

After a single by freshman Samantha Bonvino (Milford, Mass.) to move up Cahill to third, junior Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y.) cashed in Cahill on a sacrifice fly to put the Ravens ahead 3-0. Franklin Pierce would tack on three more in the top of the seventh, as a Sorenson double would get her on, followed by a sac bunt by Hansen. Wiley would reach on an error as Sorenson scored on the same error, then Wood would crack her fourth home run of the season, putting her one home run away from tying the program record in that category.

Hansen refused to break, going the distance tossing shutout ball to get her fourth victory of the season.

Game two brought a whole new monster, to counter the lack of scoring in game one. Sorenson would hit a leadoff home run to begin the game, setting the table and giving the Ravens a 1-0 lead. But junior Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) would be met by a Saint Michael's offense ready to strike. Judi Barcavage would blast a three-run home run off of Adee in the bottom of the first, giving the Purple Knights a 3-1 lead.

That wouldn't hold for long, as Sorenson couldn't be stopped, hitting a double to score Caputo to pull the game back within one, 3-2. With Sorenson on second, senior Alicia Dean (Danvers, Mass.) would double to score Sorenson, tying the game at 3-3.

Saint Michael's would respond in the bottom of the third, before Sorenson played hero again, and blasted her second home run of the game, a solo shot, to re-tie the game at 4-4.

With the score tied, the Ravens had enough, and put up an eight-run top of the fifth inning, capped by a bases loaded single by Sorenson to get the scoring for the inning started.

With the score 12-4, the Purple Knights would add one in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 12-5. However, the Ravens hadn't had enough and put up another six runs in the top of the sixth that featured doubles from senior Karissa Forzese (Methuen, Mass.) and Mikaela Ballmer (Birdsboro, Pa.). Freshman Jillian Ostrander (Glens Falls, N.Y.) also clocked her first collegiate home run of her career to give the Ravens the commanding 18-5 lead before Adee held down the fort in the bottom of the inning to give the Ravens the shortened win.

Adee snagged her third win of the season, while Danielle Brown received the loss in the second game as well as the first, going only four and a third in game two after going the distance for the loss in game one.

The Ravens return to the diamond, tomorrow, April 24 when they travel to Stonehill for a single game starting at 3 p.m.
