Adee, Rodriguez combine for three hitter, softball defeats Saint Michael’s 6-0

RINDGE, N.H. (April 14, 2015) – Junior Mandi Adee (Kinderhook, N.Y.) only allowed one hit over five innings, while freshman Jenna Rodriguez (New Egypt, N.J.) gave up only two hits in two relief innings as the two pitchers didn't allow a single run as the Franklin Pierce University Ravens softball team defeated the Saint Michael's Purple Knights by a final score of 6-0 in Northeast-10 play at the Melissa Bisaccia Memorial Softball Complex on Tuesday.

With the win, the Ravens improve to 4-10 overall (4-9 Northeast-10) while the Purple Knights remain winless at 0-14 (0-4 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce got the ball rolling early, opening the scoring in the second inning. Graduate student Jamie Wiley (Cape Vincent, N.Y.) hit a one out triple off the top of the left field wall, eventually scoring on a single to left field by senior Alicia Dean (Danvers, Mass.) to give the Ravens a 1-0 lead.

That lead would multiply by the third inning, as junior Courtney Caputo (Stony Brook, N.Y.) would lead things off by reaching on an error. The Ravens would manufacture their runs the old fashioned way with a little small ball after that, as juniors Julie Gallagher (Flanders, N.J.) and Tricia Hansen (Mansfield, Mass.) laid down back-to-back bunt singles. During Hansen's at bat, the Ravens were able to also pull off a double steal, with Gallagher taking second and Caputo scoring from third.

Freshman Cassidy Sorenson (Billerica, Mass.) followed up Hansen at the plate with a single up the middle to score Gallagher, moving the Ravens lead to 3-0. Junior Erin Wood (Dover Plains, N.Y.) would cap off the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Hansen and give the Ravens a 4-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Ravens would tack on one more, started by a leadoff single by junior Morgan Cahill (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). She would be replaced on the base paths by freshman Abbigael Cook (Greenville, R.I.), who would steal a base and score on a Caputo single up the middle, taking a 5-0 lead.

Franklin Pierce would score their final run of the day in the fifth, as with two outs, Wood doubled down the left field line, and came in to score only moments later on a Wiley single up the middle to give the Ravens a 6-0 lead, which would be the final score.

Adee's only hit allowed came in the third inning at the hands of sophomore Danielle Barbuto, as she didn't walk anybody, and struck out six over five innings of work. Rodriguez gave up two hits and a walk in her two innings of flawless work.

Eight of nine players in the Ravens lineup collected hits on the day, with Wiley the only player with multiple hits, going two for three.

Franklin Pierce will return home again tomorrow, April 15, when they take on the Saint Anselm College Hawks at Bisaccia Memorial Softball Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
