Rowing Travels to Hartford, Begins 2018 Schedule

HARTFORD, Conn. (October 1, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University rowing program began their 2018 season this Saturday at the Riverfront Recapture in Hartford, Conn.

“It was a great day to build off of for our upcoming year,” said head coach Sarah Caruthers. “The current was extremely tough for us. We are lucky to have a body of water like Pearly Pond at home, but when we face a current like the CT River had on Saturday, it does put us at a disadvantage. We had to switch up the line-ups in the Varsity 4s after a medical episode in the Varsity 8. Our second Varsity 4 consisted of mostly novices, and they did a terrific job after having little time on the water together. The team did a great job regrouping and took advantage of the opportunity to have another race in the tough current. With that being said, I am very proud with the improvements we have made over the past year, and it showed in how the boats went down the course on Saturday. We know where we need to go from here and we are looking forward to an exciting year ahead”

The Varsity 8+ lineup consisted of senior Holly Hay (Miller Place, N.Y.), senior Marykate Cullinane (Medford, Mass.), senior Shelby Telega (South Deerfield, Mass.), sophomore Katrina Wilson (Rindge, N.H.), senior Hannah Eldridge (Northbridge, Mass.), freshman Emily Rice (Worcester, Mass.), senior Kaitlin Morin (Raymond, N.H.), junior Sophia Alexandrou (Windham, N.H.) and senior coxswain Kyra Fairley (Kingston, N.Y.). The grouping came in with a time of 24:09.09 in the Women’s Open 8+ event, finishing ahead of Assumption’s second boat.

In the Varsity 4+ event Telega, Cullinane, Morin, Wilson, and Fairley (Coxswain) finished with a time of 29:54.32 in the Women’s Open 4+. They were trailed by their teammates Hay, Rice, freshman Alexandria Contino (Galloway, N.J.), sophomore Emalee Frady (Anaheim, Calif.) and Alexandrou (Coxswain) who finished with a time of 33:45.05.

The Ravens host the inaugural Monadnock Chase this coming Saturday, October 6th on Pearly Pond against Merrimack College.
