Rowing has Two Recognized as CRCA Scholar-Athletes

CRCA National Scholar-Athletes

RINDGE, N.H. (May 28, 2016) – Seniors Mary Quinn (Erie, Pa.) and Kasie Tucker (Bow, N.H.) of the Franklin Pierce University rowing team were honored as a National Scholar-Athletes by the College Rowing Coaches Association in an announcement made by CRCA earlier this week.

For Quinn, this is her second CRCA Scholar-Athlete award. Last year she became the first student-athlete in the 20-year history of rowing at Franklin Pierce to win the award. Quinn served as the first-varsity coxswain for the spring campaign, coxing both the first four and the eight. She also led the freshman four to a gold medal at the Textile River Regatta in Lowell, Mass. last fall, marking the program's first gold medal ever at the highly competitive fall race. Quinn was also recognized as a 2016 New England Rowing Championships Scholar-Athlete, for posting the highest grade-point average on the team.

Tucker spent the spring season battling a hip injury. Over the course of winter training, Tucker posted the team's second fastest 2000-meter time. Tucker rowed in the three seat of first varsity four. The boat won its first two races of the season, downing Massachusetts Maritime in Amherst, Mass., and defeating Schenectady Community College and Johnson & Wales a week later, at a meet hosted by Union College. The four took second in the Northeast-10 Challenge and, a week later, fell short of finals at New England Rowing Championships, but managed a strong second-place finish in the petite final of the event.

To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must carry a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, must have rowed in a minimum of 75% of her team's spring races and must be in at least her second year of eligibility.
