Minors Dominates as Men’s Track & Field Takes Fifth at Northeast-10 Championship

BOSTON (February 18, 2017) – Senior Dage Minors (Hamilton Parish, Bermuda) chalked up four Northeast-10 Conference titles on Saturday, pushing his career total to 15 championships and leading the way for the Franklin Pierce University men's track & field team to a fifth-place finish at the Northeast-10 Championship, held at Reggie Lewis Center. Minors took home an individual title in the 800 meters and also anchored the Ravens' distance medley, 4x400-meter and 4x800-meter relay squads, all of which were victorious.

In all, Franklin Pierce finished the day with 85.5 points, which was good enough to place fifth in the 11-team field. Up front, Southern Connecticut State (147 points) took home the team title, followed by American International (137 points) in second and Merrimack (100.5 points) in third.

Minors picked up his individual title in the 800 meters, an event in which he is the fastest man in the nation. He turned in a time of 1:54.42 to win on Saturday, picking up 10 points for the Ravens in the process.

The Ravens also got 10 points each from a trio of victorious relays. Saturday marked the first time all season Franklin Pierce had fielded a distance medley relay team, and the quartet came away victorious anyway. A lineup of freshman Jeff Reddy (Chester, N.H.), senior Alex Bonitto (Lynn, Mass.), junior Joshua Ercolini (Woburn, Mass.) and Minors turned in a winning time of 10:17.52. It was the fourth straight indoor DMR title for the Ravens at the Northeast-10 Championship.

Franklin Pierce also won the indoor 4x800-meter relay for the fourth straight season. Minors ran the anchor again, following junior Adam Bryson (Lynn, Mass.), freshman Tyler Hayes (Kings Park, N.Y.) and junior Martin Gradijan (Lebanon, N.H.) to put together a first-place time of 7:53.94.

Meanwhile, a majority of the distance medley lineup came back to pick up the program's first ever title in the 4x400-meter relay. It was senior Cory Cataldo (Tewksbury, Mass.), followed by Ercolini, Bonitto and Minors, to post a winning time of 3:22.94.

Cataldo and Reddy were both able to score in individual events as well, in addition to their work in the relays. Cataldo finished fourth in both the 60-meter hurdles (8.43) and the long jump (6.81m), to pick up five points in each event. Meanwhile, Reddy picked up six points with a sixth-place finish in the 3000 meters (8:46.43). Cataldo was joined in the 60-meter hurdles final by junior Craig Telfer (Lebanon, N.H.), who finished sixth, with a time of 8.72 seconds, to pick up three points.

Franklin Pierce had two other individuals pick up points on the track at Reggie Lewis Center. In the 500 meters, freshman Trevor Guay (Londonderry, N.H.) finished fifth to pick up four points, with a time of 1:06.75. In the 1000 meters, senior Jon Holmes (Albany, N.Y.) placed eighth to pick up one point, with a time of 2:36.05.

The rest of the Ravens' scoring came in field events. Behind Cataldo in the long jump, junior Rindal Pierre-Canel (Randolph, Mass.) picked up four points with a fifth-place leap of 6.76 meters. Pierre-Canel also scored in the triple jump, where he finished third with a mark of 13.89 meters, to pick up six points. His triple jump performance was good enough to meet the NEICAAA Championship qualifying standard in the event. Behind Pierre-Canel in the triple jump, senior Cody Steed (Chichester, N.H.) tallied one point for an eighth-place mark of 13.67 meters.

Elsewhere, freshman Domenic Branco (Pelham, N.H.) chalked up eight points by heaving the shot put 14.05 meters to finish second. Rounding out Franklin Pierce's scoring were sophomore Robert Boardman (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), who picked up 3.5 points by finishing fifth in the high jump (1.89m), and senior Mark Choiniere (Ballston Spa, N.Y.), who collected two points by placing seventh in the pole vault (3.80m).

The Ravens return to action on Feb. 24-25, when they return to the Reggie Lewis Center for the NEICAAA Championships.
