Cataldo Shines as Men’s Track & Field Takes Third at Dartmouth Relays

HANOVER, N.H. (January 8, 2017) – After nearly a month off, the Franklin Pierce University track & field team returned to action on Sunday, with select members traveling to the Dartmouth Relays, where the squad procured 43 points and a third-place finish. Senior Cory Cataldo (Tewksbury, Mass.) took sixth the 60-meter hurdles and fourth in the long jump, and also ran the anchor leg on the third-place 4x200-meter relay team to lead the way for the Ravens.

Individually, Cataldo was responsible for 12 points for the Ravens. In the 60-meter hurdles, he ran a time of 8.63 seconds in the prelims to place fifth in his heat (eighth overall) and advance to the final. He was three ticks better in the final, stopping the clock at 8.60 seconds to finish sixth for six points. He also picked up six points via a fourth-place finish in the long jump, where he leaped 6.53 meters.

Cataldo also ran the anchor leg in the 4x200-meter relay, which finished in third place to pick up six points. Junior Nicholas Jacques (Westfield, Mass.), sophomore Jaris Neville (Atlanta, Ga.), freshman Trevor Guay (Londonderry, N.H.) and Cataldo combined for a time of 1:32.38.

Neville also picked up points individually for the Ravens, as he competed in the 60-meter dash. In the prelims, he ran a time of 7.18 seconds, which was good for second in his heat (seventh overall). Neville was then four ticks better in the final, running a time of 7.14 seconds to place fifth and earn six points. His time is currently tied for sixth in the Northeast-10 Conference on the season.

The highest individual score of the day came via freshman Richard Cote (Waterboro, Maine) in the mile race walk. Cote was the lone collegiate runner entered in the event, which meant his seventh-place finish of 9:27.74 earned 10 points for the crimson and grey.

The remainder of Franklin Pierce's points came in field events on Sunday. Senior Cody Steed (Chichester, N.H.) collected eight points in the triple jump, as he finished second by posting a mark of 13.38 meters, which is currently good for 10th in the NE10. Meanwhile, senior Mark Josselyn (Halifax, Mass.) tallied a point with an eighth-place heave of 14.66 meters in the weight throw.

One other notable mark for the Ravens came in the 3000 meters, where senior B.J. Smith (Concord, N.H.) turned in a time of 9:03.77 to place 22nd. The time would have been good for sixth in the NE10, except Smith has already run a faster time earlier in the season.

When all was said and done, the 43 points for the Ravens was good for third. Host Dartmouth took the title with 189 points, while Massachusetts Lowell placed second with 126 points.

The Ravens return to action on Friday, Jan. 13, when they travel to the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartan Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y.
