Biunno, Wooten Capture Titles as Men’s Track & Field Finishes Fourth at Northeast-10 Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 7, 2016) – Senior Vinny Biunno (Montgomery, N.Y.) captured the title in the high jump on Saturday, while graduate student Andre Wooten (St. Charles, Mo.) claimed the crown in the triple jump, leading the way for the Franklin Pierce University men's track & field team on the second day of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, hosted by American International. The duo led 10 Ravens to score points in individual events on Saturday, as Franklin Pierce finished fourth at the meet.

Franklin Pierce had 10 student-athletes and one relay team collect points across 10 events, to finish with 88 points over the two days of the Northeast-10 Championships. Host American International (200 points) claimed the Conference title, while Southern Connecticut State (185.5 points) took second and Stonehill (92 points) finished third. Behind the Ravens, Merrimack (72.5 points) rounded out the top five.

The two Northeast-10 titles claimed by Ravens accounted for 20 of the day's 88 points. Wooten's winning triple jump mark of 15.28 meters marked a new Northeast-10 Championships record, while Biunno cleared 1.93 meters to win the high jump. Each performance was worth 10 points for Franklin Pierce.

Biunno also scored in the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday, as he picked up four points with a fifth-place finish (15.25). Sophomore Craig Telfer (Lebanon, N.H.) was also in the 110-meter hurdles final and was one spot in front of Biunno, finishing fourth (15.23) to earn five points. Telfer's time was good enough to meet the NEICAAA Championships qualifying standard in the event.

Biunno's 14 points on the day were matched by senior Colton Ham (Webster, N.H.), who added 14 points of his own. Ham finished second in the 5000 meters to earn eight points, with a time of 14:57.46, which was good enough to meet the NEICAAA qualifying mark. He also placed third in the 3000-meter steeplechase to pick up six more points, with a time of 9:26.02.

Ham had company in each of his events from other Ravens who scored points as well. In the 5000, junior Jon Holmes (Albany, N.Y.) picked up three points with a sixth-place finish (15:16.57). In the 3000-meter steeplechase, sophomore Martin Gradijan (Lebanon, N.H.) collected two points with a seventh-place finish (9:54.05).

Sophomore Nicholas Jacques (Westfield, Mass.) scored a point each in a pair of track events, with a pair of eighth-place finishes. Jacques turned in a time of 11.45 seconds in the 100-meter dash final and added a mark of 24.31 seconds in the 200-meter dash final. The final individual scoring on the track for the Ravens was junior Cory Cataldo (Tewksbury, Mass.), who picked up one point for an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, with a time of 56.48 seconds.

Franklin Pierce picked up two points with a seventh-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. A lineup of Biunno, Cataldo, sophomore Rindal Pierre-Canel (Randolph, Mass.) and Jacques got the baton around the track in 43.30 seconds.

Both Ravens who competed in the decathlon also scored points as well, as junior Alex Bonitto (Lynn, Mass.) finished sixth (5581 points) and junior John Delahanty (Long Beach, N.Y.) took seventh (5258 points). The highest point total for each on the day came in the final event of the decathlon, the 1500 meters, as Bonitto picked up 711 points with a time of 4:35.13, and Delahanty collected 663 points with a time of 4:42.78.

The Ravens return to the track on Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, when they travel to the NEICAAA Championships, hosted by Southern Connecticut State in New Haven, Conn.
