Gisore Produces All-New England Run in 5,000m; Men’s Track & Field Competes at Day One of NEICAAA Championship

Biunno eighth in heptathlon after four events

Gisore Gisore's All-New England time on Saturday made him the first runner in program history to meet an NCAA Championship qualifying standard.

BOSTON, Mass. (February 22, 2013) – Junior Antoine Gisore (Concord, N.H.) finished seventh out of 31 runners in the 5,000 meters (14:46.84) to earn All-New England honors on Saturday at the first day of the NEICAAA Indoor Track and Field Championship, hosted by Boston University at BU Track and Tennis Center. The meet is colloquially known as the New England Championship.

Gisore's time dropped nearly six seconds off his previous best time of the year, set on Feb. 11 at Tufts, and met the NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time (14:47.09) in the event, making him the first person in program history to post an NCAA qualifying time. Provisional qualifying times are used to fill events at the NCAA Championship which do not have a full complement (16 in individual events) of student-athletes who have met the automatic qualifying time (14:03.71 in the 5,000m). Heading into the weekend, four runners in the country had met that automatic qualifying time, while 16th on the descending-order list was a time of 14:23.55.

Gisore also became the first Raven program history to earn All-New England honors. All-New England awards are given to the top eight finishers in each event at the NEICAAA Championship.

Freshman Vincent Biunno (Montgomery, N.Y.) will have a chance to earn All-New England honors on Saturday, as he currently ranks eighth (of 12 competitors) in the heptathlon through four of seven events, with 2,571 points. Within the heptathlon, he finished second in the 60-meter dash (7.36), third in the high jump (1.93m) and fifth in the long jump (6.32m). Despite finishing 10th in the shot put (8.82m), which netted him just 415 points (657 in the long jump was his next-lowest), Biunno heads into Saturday just 36 points back of fifth place. The remaining events are the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000 meters.

Elsewhere on Saturday, freshman Mike Abrams (Newark, N.J.) finished 28th out of 34 competitors in the 200-meter dash (22.75).

Franklin Pierce also featured an all-freshman quartet of Colton Ham (Webster, N.H.) to Adam-Corey Rander (Bronx, N.Y.) to Isaac Fithian (Kingston, N.H.) to Chaz Munroe (Concord, N.H.) in the distance medley relay; the team placed 19th out of 24 squads (10:33.27). The Ravens are sending their best distance medley relay team to the Mason Last Chance meet on Sunday in Fairfax, Va. to make a final attempt at meeting the NCAA qualifying time in the event.

In addition to Biunno's final three heptathlon events, Gisore is scheduled to compete in the mile on Saturday at the NEICAAA Championship. The Ravens will also field a team in the 4x400-meter relay.
