Gisore, Rugabirwa Log Top-10 NE-10 Times for Men’s Track & Field at Tufts Cupid Challenge

Abrams tallies pair of top-five finishes at meet

Rugabirwa Rugabirwa won the 3,000 meters on Monday at the Tufts Cupid Challenge, and now ranks 10th in the Northeast-10 in the event.

MEDFORD, Mass. (February 11, 2013) – Junior Antoine Gisore (Concord, N.H.) and sophomore Makopa Rugabirwa (Concord, N.H.) both had strong showings in distance events in the Gantcher Center on Monday evening at the Tufts Cupid Challenge. The event was moved to Monday due to Winter Storm Nemo, and served as a replacement for meets which were cancelled at MIT and Boston University over the weekend.

Rugabirwa had the brightest finish of the day, as he won the 3,000 meters (8:43.20) for the Ravens. It was his second 3,000-meter run of the season, and he dropped almost 10 seconds from his time at the Dartmouth Relays on Jan. 13. After conversion per NCAA standards, the time is recorded as 8:37.19, which ranks 10th in the Northeast-10 (for an in-depth discussion of indoor track and field time conversions, click here).

Meanwhile, it was Gisore who had the strongest showing in comparison to his Division II brethren, as he placed third in the 5,000 meters (15:02.24). It was his first competition in the 5,000 of the winter and, after conversion, the time gets dropped to 14:52.68, which ranks seventh in the Northeast-10 and is just over five seconds off of the NCAA Championship provisional qualification time.

At a distance 4,940 meters shorter, freshman Mike Abrams (Newark, N.J.) came in second in the 60-meter dash (7.19). The time was just six hundredths (0.06) of a second off his previous best of the season, set at Wesleyan. Abrams also added a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash (50.81) and a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.18).

The meet was the final tune-up for the Ravens before their inaugural trip to the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship, which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 16 at Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
