Men’s Tennis’ Toombs Named to All-Northeast-10 Third Team

Men's Tennis All-Northeast-10 selections

RINDGE, N.H. (April 20, 2017) – Freshman Matthew Toombs (Pleasanton, Calif.) of the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team has been named to the All-Northeast-10 Conference Third Team at sixth singles, as announced on Thursday by the Conference office.

Instead of a vote by the league's coaches, All-Conference honorees in tennis are selected strictly based on statistics. To be eligible for selection, a player must compete in at least 50% of his team's Conference matches over the course of the season. The individual is then ranked for All-Conference consideration in the flight in which they played more than 50% of their matches, though all match results are included when calculating records.

Toombs -- who is also a member of the men's ice hockey team at Franklin Pierce -- joined the men's tennis squad as a walk-on for the spring portion of the season. In all, he played in eight of the team's nine NE10 matches in 2016-17, and posted a 5-3 mark in league play. Toombs earned the accolade at sixth singles, where he posted a 4-2 record. He also went 0-1 at third singles and 1-0 at fifth singles.

It is the second NE10 award of the season for Toombs, as he was also named to the men's ice hockey All-Rookie Team over the winter.
