Men’s Tennis Edged by Adelphi, 5-4

RINDGE, N.H. (April 12, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team suffered a close, 5-4, defeat at home on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play against Adelphi.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-12 (2-5 NE10), while Adelphi improves to 8-4 (6-2 NE10).

Adelphi took two of the three doubles points to take an early 2-1 lead on Wednesday. Franklin Pierce claimed first doubles, as sophomores James Bisazza (West Barnstable, Mass.) and Andrew Schadt (Tolland, Conn.) picked up an 8-6 win over Adelphi junior Matteo Cannavera and graduate student Uladzislau Litvinchuk.

Second doubles would be the tightest of the three doubles contests, and served as one of the day's pivotal matches. The match went the distance and required a tiebreak, as Adelphi senior Roey Heymann and Sabin Adrian Saveluc pulled out a 9-8 (4) win over sophomore Marcus Lawrence (Acton, Mass.) and freshman Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel).

The two teams split the six singles matches, as Adelphi held on to the one-point lead for a 5-4 win. The critical singles match came at second singles, where Barak and Litvinchuk locked horns in a three-set contest. Litvinchuk ultimately came out on top, as he rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Franklin Pierce's singles points came at first, third and sixth singles. At first singles, Bisazza bettered Cannavera in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (3). The other two wins required a tiebreaker set, as Schadt took a 6-3, 4-6, 10-2 win at third singles against Heymann and freshman Matthew Toombs (Pleasanton, Calif.) notched a 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 win at sixth singles over sophomore Connor Dove.

The Ravens return to the court on Thursday, April 13, when they travel to Post for a non-conference contest at 2 p.m. in Waterbury, Conn.
