Men’s Tennis Edged by Assumption, 5-4

RINDGE, N.H. (March 30, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team was defeated on Thursday afternoon, 5-4, at home in Northeast-10 Conference play by Assumption.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-10 (0-3 NE10), while Assumption improves to 3-1 (1-1 NE10).

Assumption opened the match by taking two of three doubles contests to build a 2-1 lead. At first doubles, Assumption seniors Chris Waung and Marco Leung posted an 8-5 win over Franklin Pierce sophomores James Bisazza (West Barnstable, Mass.) and Andrew Schadt (Tolland, Conn.). Meanwhile, at third doubles, it was seniors Casey Hodor and Tom Knight with an 8-4 win over junior Olivier Viel (Quebec City, Quebec) and freshman Matthew Toombs (Pleasanton, Calif.).

The lone doubles point for Franklin Pierce came at second doubles. Freshman Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) and sophomore Marcus Lawrence (Acton, Mass.) were able to secure an 8-6 win over Assumption junior Ryan Foster and sophomore Danny Waung.

Franklin Pierce battled back to force a split of the six singles matches, but could not find the elusive fifth point, as Assumption came away with the 5-4 win. The most competitive match of singles play came at fourth singles. Lawrence was able to edge out Danny Waung for a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win.

The remaining two points for the Ravens came at fifth and sixth singles. At fifth singles, Viel picked a straight-set, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hodor. At sixth singles, in the pro set format, Toombs used a tiebreaker to pull out a 9-8 (2) win over Knight.

The Ravens return to the court on Tuesday, April 4, when they travel to Saint Anselm for an NE10 match at 3 p.m. in Manchester, N.H.
