Men’s Tennis Ekes Out 5-4 Win Over Western New England

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 15, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team picked up a 5-4 win over Western New England in non-conference, neutral-site play on Tuesday afternoon, continuing the team's Florida trip.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-8, while Western New England falls to 2-1.

The two teams split their six singles matches on Tuesday, with Franklin Pierce taking wins at first, third and fifth singles, while Western New England responded with wins at second, fourth and sixth singles.

At first singles, freshman James Bisazza (West Barnstable, Mass.) posted a 6-2, 7-5 win over senior Alexander Sause. At third singles, freshman Andrew Schadt (Tolland, Conn.) notched a 6-2, 7-5 victory over senior Chris Spear. At fifth singles, sophomore Olivier Viel (Quebec City, Quebec) scratched out a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over sophomore Nick Raschilla. The only singles match which needed all three sets came at third singles, where WNEU freshman Michael Tran outlasted sophomore Logan Sherwood (Merrimac, Mass.), 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 (tiebreak).

With the six singles matches split, the match turned on the outcome of the three doubles matches, and Franklin Pierce collected the victory by posting wins at second and third doubles. At second doubles, Schadt and senior Drew Bennett (Rindge, N.H.) combined to roll past Sause and senior Adam Zimmerman, 8-1. Meanwhile, at third doubles, it was Viel and Sherwood posting an 8-4 victory over Raschilla and Spear.

The Ravens return to the court on Thursday, March 17, when they square off with Illinois Wesleyan in a non-conference, neutral-site match in Orlando.
