Men’s Tennis Shutout at Stonehill, 9-0

Ravens visit Southern New Hampshire Wednesday

Bennett EASTON, Mass. (September 30, 2014) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team was defeated on Tuesday evening, 9-0, by Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference play at Stonehill.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-4 (0-3 Northeast-10), while Stonehill opens the 2014-15 campaign at 1-0 (1-0 Northeast-10).

The Ravens gave Stonehill all it could handle in first and second singles on Tuesday. At first singles, senior Christopher Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) locked horns with Stonehill freshman Thomas Bellio. After Brewer took the first set, 6-4, Bellio stormed back with a 6-0 win in the second set. Bellio ultimately prevailed in the third-set tiebreak to come away with a 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 victory.

Somehow, the match at second singles was even closer, as junior Drew Bennett (Rindge, N.H.) tussled with junior Philip Klados. Klados rolled to a 6-1 win in the first set, but Bennett battled back to squeak out a 7-5 victory in the second set. The third-set tiebreak needed extra points to be decided before Bennett ultimately yielded and Klados escaped with a 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 win.

In all, five different Stonehill players came away with wins in both singles and doubles play on Tuesday. Prior to his win at first singles, Bellio teamed with freshman Nikolay Lisichenok to post a win at first doubles as well. Freshman Jeffrey Gagnon had the easiest time of it, in terms of the score line. He teamed with junior Gerard Tierney for an 8-0 win at third doubles and later rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at fifth singles.

The Ravens return to the court on Wednesday, Oct. 1, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 3 p.m. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Saturday, Oct. 11 against Saint Michael's at 10 a.m.
