Brewer Leads Way as Men’s Tennis Picks Up 6-3 Win Over Saint Michael’s

Brewer, Petrie each win two matches on day

Brewer Brewer picked up wins at both first doubles and second singles on Sunday afternoon.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 28, 2013) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team defeated Saint Michael's, 6-3, en route to its first Northeast-10 Conference victory of the season. Juniors Christopher Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) and Mark Petrie (Pembroke, Mass.) each picked up two wins on the day for the Ravens.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-2 (1-2 Northeast-10), while Saint Michael's falls to 0-2 (0-2 Northeast-10).

The Ravens came out strong, taking two of three double matches. Brewer and senior Patrick Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) put on a dominant display of high energy and error-free tennis during their 8-3 win over senior Nick Bosco and freshman Hayden Steward.

Senior Tyler Colombo (Gardner, Mass.) and Petrie followed up with a win at third doubles, but were forced into a tiebreak before winning their match over Saint Michael's sophomores Sam Laves and Charlie Merry, 9-8 (7-3).

The Ravens extended their winning ways to singles play where a focused Brewer surrendered only three games during his 6-2, 6-1 win over Steward. Brewer won many points on his serve and kept many balls in play while waiting for his opponent to make errors. "Mentally, I came out here to redeem myself after yesterday's loss," Brewer said after the match.

Sophomore Jared Taylor (Pelham, N.H.) claimed his fourth consecutive singles win by taking down Laves, 6-0, 6-3. Taylor relied on his strong serve and occasionally mixed things up to keep his opponent on-edge.

A confident Petrie won his second singles match of the season, defeating senior Tom Brahm in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Petrie played a well-executed game, moving well, coming to the net and hitting forehand winners to claim the match.

An injury during warm-up forced Colombo to default his sixth singles match to freshman Ben Lambert.

Head Coach Marty Morrissey was pleased with the win and credited his doubles players for setting the tone for the match.

The Ravens return to the court on Monday, Oct. 7, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference match in Manchester, N.H.
