Men’s Tennis Whitewashes Saint Anselm, 9-0

All six Ravens win in both singles and doubles play

Brewer Brewer swept through his match at second singles after also posting a win at first doubles.

RINDGE, N.H. (April 2, 2013) – Senior Pat Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn.) and junior Christopher Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt.) teamed up for a win at first doubles and later won at first and second singles, respectively, on Wednesday afternoon, to lead the Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team to a 9-0 victory over Saint Anselm in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-6 (2-5 Northeast-10), while Saint Anselm falls to 0-7 (0-6 Northeast-10).

All six Franklin Pierce players won in both singles and doubles play on Wednesday. The teams played the three doubles matches first, with Gilhuly and Brewer leading the charge by dispatching Saint Anselm's John Joyce and Kevin Greene, 8-3. The Ravens swept the other two doubles matches, posting 8-0 wins in each. Sophomores Jared Taylor (Pelham, N.H.) and Drew Bennett (Rindge, N.H.) blanked Christopher Parent and Peter O'Connell at second doubles, while juniors Mark Petrie (Pembroke, Mass.) and Aras Banevicius (Canton, Conn.) shutout Shane Archambault and Joe Cahill at third doubles.

The success continued into singles play, where Franklin Pierce won each of the top four singles matches to put the team match away. Gilhuly downed Joyce, 6-3, 6-1, at first singles; Brewer and Taylor swept Greene and Parent, both by 6-0, 6-0 scores, at second and third singles, respectively; and Petrie bettered O'Connell, 6-2, 6-2, at fourth singles.

With the team match already decided, fifth and sixth singles were played in the pro set format. Bennett blanked Cahill, 8-0, while Banevicius trumped Archambault, 8-4.

The Ravens are scheduled to return to the court on Sunday, April 6, when they host Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference match at noon.
