NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 23, 2017) – The no. 24 nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team played Northeast-10 Conference opponent Southern Connecticut State University to a 0-0 double overtime draw Saturday afternoon on Jess Dow Field. The Ravens picked up an important road point as their recorded moved to 5-0-1, 3-0-1 NE10 while the Owls earned their second tie at 4-1-2, 2-0-2, NE10.

Southern Connecticut outshot Franklin Pierce 23-12 over the course of the match. They also had 12 corner kick opportunities compared to the Ravens three. Jadel Poon-Lewis (Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago) stopped a season-high eight shots in the tie while Noah Varonier made seven saves.

The first 45 minutes of play was scoreless as the Owls offense pressured the Ravens defensive unit and Poon-Lewis. SCSU notched a total of nine shots and four on goal as Poon-Lewis made four saves. Devante Teixeira looked to give his squad the lead in the 44th minute, but his shot was blocked by a Raven defender.

In the second half, the Ravens had a good chance to take the lead in the 64th minute as Yannik Felber (Koblenz, Germany) headed the ball off a cross towards the cage, but his header was too high as it sailed out of play.

During the 70th minute, Blaise Haba dribbled through the box and the Ravens defense to set up a 1-1 opportunity with Poon-Lewis. The sophomore netminder made a sprawling save on Haba's shot attempt to keep the score deadlocked at 0-0.

With five minutes left in regulation the Ravens had two opportunities to notch the game winner. Following a foul, Hamish Cadigan (Christchurch, New Zealand) rifled a free kick from the 30 yard line, but it was cleared out of play by the hosts. Cadigan then lined up for a corner and once again, the ball was cleared out by the Owls.

40 seconds remained on the clock when Poon-Lewis played aggressively out of the cage which left the net wide open for Louis Greenway-Tambini to tally the game winner, but Greenway-Tambini's shot was wide as the teams needed free soccer to determine a winner.

Cadigan had another free kick a little further out this time in the first overtime and he lofted a high arcing shot that was grabbed to the left of the net by Owls goalie Noah Varonier.

Jordan Barnett (Grimsby, England) headed away a cross just outside the box that could have been easily headed in by the hosts. Possession changed as the Ravens streaked down the field until Noam Kolakofsky (Liman, Israel) struck a cross to Niklas Laudahn (Olfen, Germany) who had an open look from 18 yards out, but Varonier sprawled out for a diving stop to keep the match scoreless.

In the second overtime, Cadigan stroked another free kick that was cleared out of bounds by the Owls. Joel Peterson (Christchurch, New Zealand) took the corner and Charlie Madden (Newton Abbot, England) got his head on the ball, but his header went out of play behind the net which resulted in a goalkick.

With four minutes to go, Sabri Akter snuck through the Raven defense and had a one-on-one with Poon-Lewis. Poon-Lewis took an angle, played aggressively and forced Akter to rush a chip shot high to keep the match scoreless.

The Owls had a few chances to take the contest 1-0. Their best one of the entire match came in the 107th minute as Atker looked to have pushed the ball past the goaline, but Poon-Lewis snuffed out the shot attempt just in time as the game ended as a tie after 110 minutes of play.

The Ravens remain away from Rindge as their next contest comes on Tuesday, September 26th when they travel to NE10 opponent Saint Anselm for a 4:00 p.m. conference duel.
