Men’s Soccer Downed at Le Moyne, 4-3, in Double Overtime

Preber nets eighth of season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 27, 2015) – The Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team got second-half goals from junior midfielder Gabriel Batista (Fortaleza, Brazil) and senior forward Marius Preber (Jessheim, Norway) on Tuesday afternoon, as the Ravens forged a 3-3 tie through the end of regulation, but Le Moyne's Rossel Cacho had other ideas. The junior forward put home the golden goal in the 104th minute, 3:21 into the second overtime, to lift the Dolphins to a 4-3 win in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Field.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-9-3 (2-7-3 Northeast-10), while Le Moyne improves to 11-4-1 (7-4-1 Northeast-10).

The goals came early and often on Wednesday in the Emerald City. Le Moyne took a 2-0 lead in the opening half-hour. First, in just the fourth minute, sophomore Marcello Palucci fired a shot from the top of the penalty area on the right side and put it into the top-left corner of the goal for his first goal of the season. Later, in the 22nd minute, the seventh of the season for senior back Jack Ball made it 2-0, as he finished from four yards in front of the left post, off of a corner kick by senior midfielder Cal Filtch.

Franklin Pierce would halve the deficit before halftime on a 35th-minute penalty kick, after a handball inside the top of the penalty area. Freshman back Charlie Madden (Newton Abbot, United Kingdom) salted away the penalty for his second goal of the season.

Just a shade over five minutes into the second half, in the 51st minute, the Ravens struck again to tie the game at 2-2. From the right side of the 18-yard box, junior forward Andrew LaVoie (Hebron, Conn.) fed a pass to the top of the box for Batista. Batista let fly from there and picked the upper-left corner for his first collegiate goal.

The tie would not last long, as Le Moyne claimed a 3-2 lead just 3:51 later. Graduate student forward Fabian Egger had the one-touch finish from six yards out for his fourth goal of the season, off assists from Filtch and sophomore midfielder Adam Resetarits.

The game would go quiet for the next half-hour, with Le Moyne looking to clamp down and come away with the one-goal victory. Franklin Pierce was finally able to put together the equalizer in the 88th minute, with just 2:33 to play. Batista sent a cross in front of the net from the right side, which Le Moyne sophomore goalkeeper Ben Beaury came out to challenge. Preber was first to the ball though and was able to head the ball into the vacated goal for his team-leading eighth goal of the year.

After the first overtime went scoreless, Le Moyne came up with the game-winner in the second extra session, in the 104th minute. Filtch took a free kick, which he very nearly scored on by himself, as the shot rang of the crossbar. Cacho tracked down the rebound about 12 yards from goal and spun it back into the top-left corner for his fourth goal of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) finished with five saves against nine shots on goal and took the loss (4-8-3) in net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the field, Beaury (11-4-1) made three saves against six shots on goal in the win for Le Moyne.

The Ravens return to the field on Friday, Oct. 30, when they close out the season by hosting Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
