Men’s Soccer Blanked Again, Falls 2-0 to Post

Ravens visit Saint Anselm on Saturday

RINDGE, N.H. (October 7, 2015) – For the third straight game, the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team was unable to find offense, as its scoreless streak stretched to 300:04 on Wednesday night. In non-conference play at Sodexo Field, Post used a late first-half goal and a second-half insurance marker to pick up a 2-0 victory.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-6-1 (1-5-1 Northeast-10) and is winless in its last six, while Post improves to 7-4-0 (5-2-0 Central Atlantic).

Franklin Pierce's best chance to break the scoring drought arguably came in the 16th minute, with the game still scoreless. With space to work with on the left wing, senior midfielder George Levantakis (Lynnfield, Mass.) sent a service into the penalty area. Meanwhile, the Post backline had lost track of senior forward Marius Preber (Jessheim, Norway), who was left all alone on the other end of the cross, eight yards out in front of the goal. Preber went for a one-touch finish, but could not get on top of the ball, putting it over the cage and out of play.

Post opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, as the Eagles were beneficiaries of a turnover. Trying to corral the ball as the last defender back, freshman back Jordan Barnett (Grimsby, England) could not handle it cleanly and lost possession to Post senior forward Raphael Moura at the top of the penalty area. Mora took the shot from approximately 15 yards out and put it into the top-left corner of the net for his second goal of the campaign.

Managing the 1-0 lead deep into the second half, Post doubled the lead to 2-0 with an insurance goal in the 76th minute. On the play, graduate student forward Anthony Asante wound up with the ball unmarked at the top of the penalty area on the right side. On the quick-developing play, he was able to step into a shot which he slipped inside the right post for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Over the course of the game, Franklin Pierce earned 11 corner kicks, to just two for Post, but the Ravens were unable to capitalize.

Junior goalkeeper Aidan Abolfazli (Worcester, Mass.) finished with two saves against four shots on goal and took the loss (0-1-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the field, Post junior goalkeeper Jon Hanlon (5-0-0) stopped all five shots on his goal to notch his third shutout of the season.

The Ravens return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 10, when they travel to Saint Anselm for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Melucci Field in Manchester, N.H.
