Men’s Soccer Comes Up Empty in 2-0 Loss to New Haven

Ravens host Post on Wednesday

RINDGE, N.H. (October 3, 2015) – Though it finally generated sustained pressure in the second half on Saturday night at Sodexo Field, the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team was unable to produce results with the late life. Instead, a pair of first-half goals for New Haven graduate student back Ben Lamb led the Chargers to a 2-0 victory in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-5-1 (1-4-1 Northeast-10), while New Haven improves to 4-6-0 (1-5-0 Northeast-10). It was the first win for New Haven against Franklin Pierce since the former joined the Northeast-10 in 2008. The only previous win for the Chargers in 22 tries all-time against the Ravens had been on Nov. 6, 1996 at New Haven. The game also marked the first for Franklin Pierce head coach Roy Fink against New Haven, where he had coached from 2012-14.

New Haven came out of the gate and applied pressure early on Saturday night, striking for a 1-0 lead just 5:16 into the proceedings. Freshman forward Mawasi Charles served the ball via a high cross from the left side. The service was curling towards the right post as it fell near the top of the six-yard box, connecting with the waiting head of Lamb. Lamb directed the ball back against the grain and tucked it inside the left post for his first goal of the season.

Lamb would strike again near the end of the second half, with just 2:16 remaining before the intermission. Junior midfielder Matt Dillon took a free kick from approximately 30 yards out on the left-wing side and again a service found Lamb's head as he put home his second goal of the proceedings.

Lamb earned a yellow card with his celebration, which included choice words for coach Fink on his way past the Franklin Pierce bench. Curiously, Lamb is in his first year at New Haven and never played for Fink as a Charger. Lamb would later be sent off in the 84th minute, when an ill-advised aerial challenge earned him his second yellow card of the night.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) made two saves against four shots on goal and suffered the loss (3-5-1) in goal for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the field, graduate student Stephen Sasso (4-6-0) stopped all nine shots he faced for his third shutout of the season.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Oct. 7, when they remain home to host New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
