Southern Connecticut State Rallies Past Men’s Soccer Late for 3-2 (OT) Win

Preber points streak at six games

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (September 26, 2015) – Senior midfielder George Levantakis (Lynnfield, Mass.) and graduate student forward Quincy Appah (Accra, Ghana) scored just 4:41 apart in the second half on Saturday evening, as the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team surged to a 2-1 lead at Jess Dow Field. Less than a half-hour later, the lead would evaporate though, and then sophomore midfielder Louis Greenway Tambini scored early in overtime to lift Southern Connecticut State to a 3-2, overtime victory in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-3-1 (1-2-1 Northeast-10), while Southern Connecticut State improves to 4-3-0 (3-1-0 Northeast-10).

Trailing 1-0 as the second half started to tick by, Franklin Pierce drew even in the 58th minute, as a long feed from senior midfielder Lorris Cortijo (Paris, France) set up Levantakis inside the penalty area with just the keeper to beat. Levantakis slotted his second goal of the season into the right side of the net, to the left of SCSU sophomore goalkeeper Noah Varonier.

Less than five minutes later, in the 62nd minute, the Ravens struck for the 2-1 lead. Senior forward Marius Preber (Jessheim, Norway), whose point streak now stands at six games (4-4-12) slipped the ball into the middle of the box for Appah, who put his one-time finish over the top of Varonier. The goal was Appah's fourth of the campaign.

Franklin Pierce held the lead into the final five minutes on Saturday, but the victory was not to be had for the crimson and grey, as SCSU found the equalizer in the 88th minute, with just 2:40 to play in regulation. Sophomore forward Sabri Akter collected a loose ball in front of the net, and put away his first goal of the season.

As quickly as the lead dissolved at the end of regulation, the tie was broken in overtime, as the Owls needed just 112 seconds of extra time to find the game-winning goal. Tambini beat his man with a ball between the legs and put his finish to the goalkeeper's right in the 92nd minute to send SCSU away with the 3-2 win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) finished with five saves against eight shots on goal while taking the loss (3-3-1) in goal for Franklin Pierce. Varonier (3-3-0) stopped five of the seven shots on his goal to pick up the win for SCSU.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 30, when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Penmen Field in Manchester, N.H.
