Preber finds net for third straight game

RINDGE, N.H. (October 4, 2014) – Senior midfielder David Lima (Everett, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal in the 60th minute and junior forward Marius Preber (Jessheim, Norway) added an insurance marker in the 86th minute on Saturday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over Le Moyne in Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Four different players factored in the scoring for the Ravens, as junior midfielder Lorris Cortijo (Paris, France) and graduate student midfielder Quincy Appah (Accra, Ghana) added assists.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 5-3-1 (3-2-1 Northeast-10), while Le Moyne falls to 6-3-0 (3-3-0 Northeast-10). Franklin Pierce is now unbeaten in its last four (3-0-1) and has recorded three shutouts on the season.

The game played even statistically throughout, as Le Moyne held an 8-6 edge in shot attempts and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, while Franklin Pierce enjoyed a 7-4 margin in corner kicks. For the Ravens, freshman goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) stopped all five shots on target at his end of the field to notch his third shutout of the season and pick up the win (5-1-1). At the other end, fellow freshman Ben Beaury made two stops and took the loss (6-3-0) for Le Moyne.

After the first half went scoreless, Le Moyne had what turned into a strong chance to break the ice in the 50th minute. Amid play around the Franklin Pierce penalty area, the ball came free to sophomore midfielder Ethan Gunty, who let a shot fly from about 30 yards out. LeGuyader appeared to think the ball was surely headed high, as he gave up on the shot attempt. Gunty, however, was able to put enough spin on the ball to get it to dive after it cleared the keeper. The shot narrowly ran out of space, as it clanged off the crossbar and rebounded back to LeGuyader as the game remained scoreless.

It would be the best chance of the afternoon for Le Moyne, while the Ravens struck twice in the game's final 31 minutes. In the 60th, Cortijo served a cross from the right-wing side into the middle of the penalty area. The cross nearly eluded Lima, who had to slide to get his foot to the ball at the top of the six-yard box. The touch was enough to beat Beaury for Lima's first goal of the season. For Lima, it was his first goal in nearly a calendar year, as he last scored on Oct. 8, 2013 against Stonehill.

Preber doubled the lead with his third goal of the campaign -- and his third in as many games -- in the 86th minute. This time, it was Appah who picked up the assist. Preber found a seam and made a run as Appah carried the ball through the midfield. The latter found a lane for a through ball, which Preber ran down and finished from the vicinity of the penalty spot to cap the scoring.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Oct. 8, when they travel to Stonehill for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at W.B. Mason Stadium in Easton, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Tuesday, Oct. 14 against Saint Anselm at 7 p.m.
