Men’s Soccer Equalizes Twice, Plays to 2-2 Draw at Assumption

LeGuyader makes eight saves

Alvarez Alvarez's first goal of the season came on an 81st-minute penalty kick on Saturday at Assumption.

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 27, 2014) – Junior forward Marius Preber (Jessheim, Norway) and senior back Carlos Alvarez (Pawtucket, R.I.) each scored equalizing goals on Saturday night, as the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team rallied from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to play to a 2-2 tie in Northeast-10 Conference play at Assumption. Sophomore midfielders Sarandon Dias and Hector Sola-Morla scored on the night for Assumption.

With the draw, Franklin Pierce now stands at 3-3-1 (1-2-1 Northeast-10), while Assumption moves to 1-4-1 (1-1-1 Northeast-10).

The game was tied with a half-hour to play on Saturday night, before Assumption struck for a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute. The Greyhounds took a corner kick, which was deflected by the mass of traffic in front of the net. The ball ultimately wound up on the foot of Sola-Morla, who put his shot into the upper reaches of the net for his first goal of the season.

Assumption held the one-goal lead into the final 10 minutes of regulation, until Franklin Pierce was awarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute. Alvarez, a senior tri-captain, took the penalty and put it to the back of the net for his first goal of the campaign to equalize for the Ravens and ultimately force overtime.

The remainder of regulation and both overtime periods would go without further scoring, as the Ravens and Greyhounds played to the 2-2 tie.

Earlier, the first 40 minutes went scoreless, before Assumption struck first with four minutes to play in the first half. Junior midfielder Nemanja Kaurin served a corner kick into the goalmouth and Dias got on the other end of it to put away his first goal of the year.

The Greyhounds held the 1-0 lead through halftime and the Ravens equalized for the first time in the 60th minute, just 4:16 before the Sola-Morla goal. Preber notched his first goal of the season by finishing off an assist from junior midfielder George Levantakis (Lynnfield, Mass.).

Both goalkeepers were tested often in The City of the Seven Hills on Saturday night. Freshman Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) made eight saves against 10 shots on goal to earn the tie (3-1-1) in net for Franklin Pierce. At the other end, junior Dana King stopped 12 of the 14 shots on his net to earn the draw (1-4-1) between the pipes for Assumption.

The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when they return home to host Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
