Pair of Second-Half Goals Push Men’s Soccer Over Dominican (N.Y.), 2-0

Donovan collects fifth goal in three games

Cortijo Cortijo's first goal in crimson and grey served as the game-winner on Wednesday night against Dominican.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 10, 2014) – Junior midfielder Lorris Cortijo (Paris, France) hammered home a rebound in the 51st minute for the eventual game-winning goal on Wednesday night to lead the Franklin Pierce University men's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Dominican (N.Y.) in non-conference play at Sodexo Field. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan LeGuyader (Jersey, United Kingdom) stopped all four shots on his net to earn his first collegiate shutout.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-1-0 (0-0-0 Northeast-10), while Dominican falls to 1-1-0 (0-0-0 Central Atlantic). The game was the second of a four-game homestand for the Ravens.

The first half of Wednesday's game went largely without incident, as the two teams headed into the halftime break scoreless. Each side attempted seven shots in the opening 45 minutes, with each putting two shots on net.

After 50 scoreless minutes to begin the game, Cortijo got the only goal the Ravens would need in the 51st minute. The initial shot came from graduate student midfielder Quincy Appah (Accra, Ghana) and was parried aside by Dominican sophomore goalkeeper Steven Hegner. Cortijo, who would later admit he got lucky on the play, was in the right place at the right time, as he followed up on the play into the right side of the penalty area. The rebound wound up coming straight to his feet and he drilled it to the back of the net for his first goal in a Franklin Pierce uniform.

The Ravens picked up an insurance marker in the 84th minute to double the lead and create the 2-0 final. After a handball inside the penalty area, sophomore forward Dallas Donovan (South Yarmouth, Mass.) salted away the ensuing penalty kick for his fifth goal of the young season.

LeGuyader's four-save shutout earned him his second straight win (2-0-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. Hegner finished with four saves against six shots on goal at the other end of the field and suffered the loss (1-1-0) in front of the Dominican goal.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 17, when they remain home to host defending national champion and No. 1 nationally ranked Southern New Hampshire in the Northeast-10 opener for both sides. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
