Pedro Espindola fires off four shots

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (November 1, 2013) – The Franklin Pierce University men’s soccer team concluded its 2013 regular season on Friday night with a frustrating 1-0 loss in double overtime to Southern Connecticut State at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn.

The Ravens fell to 8-7-1 overall and 7-5-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Owls improved to 9-5-1 and 9-3-1 in league play.

Ross McGibney scored the game-winner in the 106th minute off a header attempt inside the box, following a nice pass from Tyler Naef, who was credited with an assist on the play.

McGibney’s goal was part of a 13-shot attack from SCSU on the night, including three attempts apiece from Sebastian Brems and Mads Larsen.

The Ravens fired off 15 shots, as both teams put four on goal apiece. Gareth Dudney (North Andover, Mass.) and Pedro Espindola (Sao Paulo, Brazil) logged four shots apiece to lead Franklin Pierce’s attack.

Stephen Sasso stopped all four shots he faced to earn the win in net for Southern Connecticut. Sam Meza (Whittier, Calif.) got the start in goal for Franklin Pierce, and stopped all three shots he faced in 80 minutes of action. However, Mike Konzel (Webster, N.Y.) came on in relief the rest of the way, and took the loss following McGibney’s marker. Konzel fell to 0-1 on the year.

Franklin Pierce is now headed to the Northeast-10 Championship, as they will compete in the quarterfinals on Tuesday against an opponent to be determined.
