Franklin Pierces Late Surge Sinks River Hawks,4-3
Olius Nets Three Goals, Majkowski Two Assists As Hughes Gets Win In Goal
LOWELL, Mass. (Oct. 4, 2000)-- Junior forward Ernest Olius (Hillside, N.J.) registered three goals as the Franklin Pierce men's soccer team overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat UMass Lowell Wednesday night, 4-3, in a Northeast 10 Conference tilt.
Junior midfielder Radek
Majkowski (Brossard, QUE) and sophomore midfielder
Chris Schwarz (Babenhausen, Germany) were
each involved in two goals for the Ravens, who improve to 8-2
overall and 5-1 in the NE-10. The loss ends s three-game unbeaten
streak for UML, which slipped to 6-3-3 overall, 3-2-3 in the
NE-10.
The River Hawks opened the scoring in the 17th minute when junior
forward Mike Paige (Woburn, Mass.) scored
off a cross from sophomore midfielder Brandon
Curran (Tyngsboro, Mass.). Freshman forward
Sean O'Brien (Scotia, N.Y.) gave UML a
2-0 cushion in the 33rd minute when he tucked in a rebound off the
crossbar.
Olius netted his first goal on a bicycle kick by way of a cross
from Majkowski just 15 second from the half. The Ravens equalized
in the 59th minute when Schwarz blasted a rebound following a
brilliant stop from UML goalkeeper Ben
Coy (Holden, Mass.)
Olius gave Franklin Pierce the lead in the 69th minute off an
indirect kick tipped by Majkowski. The lead was short-lived,
however, as sophomore forward Angelo
Pitsis (Lynn, Mass.) headed in a rebound in the 74th
minute. Olius netted the game-winner in the 80th minute off a cross
from Schwarz.
UML had a chance for a tie in the 87th minute, but a shot by Paige
deflected off the crossbar.
Franklin Pierce outshot the River Hawks 24-13 overall and 10-6 in
the first half. Coy had three saves for UML while junior
Chris Hughes (Glasgow, Scotland) had five
saves for the Ravens. Hughes took over in net for Rob
Scholz (Schenectady, N.Y.) midway through the first
half. Playing down a man for most of the second half, Hughes
directed the Ravens' defense well, for his first win of the
season.
UML visits Saint Rose Saturday at 1:00. Franklin Pierce hosts
American International Saturday at 1:00.
