Raven Rally Comes Up Short At Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass.  (April 5, 2017) – Four players combined to score three goals or more as the Assumption College Greyhounds handed the Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team a 12-7 loss on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action. With the win, the third in a row for the Greyhounds improves their mark to 4-3 and 3-3 NE10 while the Ravens dropped their third straight and fell to 3-4, 1-4 NE10.

Assumption had three players who racked up three scores or more while the Ravens had only one. Leading the way was freshman midfielder Brett Jennings who amassed a game-best six points on four goals and two assists. Travis Reid and Spencer Marocchini tallied three goals each while Dan Farrell recorded a match-high three assists.

Junior midfielder Sean Delea (Hampstead, N.H.) led the Raven offense with three goals of his own to go along with one helper. Teammate Jack Carney (Dunbarton, N.H.) recorded two goals of his own in the loss.

Assumption scored the first four goals of the game as Marocchini tallied three of the four markers with the third coming off a catch and shoot from the top of the crease. Trevor Wilcox added his fourth of the year by receiving a pass from Aidan Murphy at the top of the crease and sniping in a top shelf attempt.

Franklin Pierce stopped play with a timeout and had a few chances to crack the scoring column. Around the 4:20 mark, the Ravens forced a turnover and set up their offensive in the attacking zone. The rock eventually found the stick of Delea who had a clear net, but his attempt went wide.

FPU stepped up the pressure on the offensive end which resulted in their first goal of the game by Carney. Carney drove behind the net from right to left and settled just outside the crease. Carney got Assumption goalie Colby Hamwey to bite on a pump fake and Carney deposited a low shot into the back of the cage to make it a 4-1 contest.

Under a minute later, Carney tallied his 13th marker of the season to cut into the deficit at 4-2. With 15 ticks left in the period, Jennings poured on an unassisted goal to bump their advantage up to 5-2.

In the second stanza, the Greyhounds held the Ravens scoreless while Travis Reid and Brett Jennings swapped goals two times to push their squad up 9-2 at the midway point.

Trailing by seven heading into the third, the Ravens looked to rally as Delea manufactured an unassisted tally, an assisted score from Castorf while Luke Tracy (Pelham, N.H.) and Anthony D'Aprile (Smithtown, N.Y.) teamed up for a catch and shoot that brought the deficit to four, 9-5 after 45 minutes.

Assumption hadn't scored since the first half and that changed in the fourth as they Greyhounds traveled to the Ravens zone a man up. Reid broke the Greyhounds scoreless stretch with his 15 goal of season and his third of the game to move Assumption ahead 10-5.

Delea answered five minutes later by rolling off a screen and rifling a shot top shelf past Hamwey to make it a four goal contest. The Ravens would cut the score to 10-7 as D'Aprile and Delea connected for a score at the 6:24 mark. Assumption would get the goal back 50 seconds later and add an insurance score to take the contest 12-7.

Raven junior goalkeeper Connor Wacksman (Guilderland, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the loss and dropped to 3-4 on the season. Colby Hamwey improved to 4-3 and stopped 15 shots in the victory.

The Ravens return home to on Saturday to take on Adelphi in a conference bout at noon.
