Carney’s Career Effort Helps Ravens Win Home Opener

RINDGE, N.H. (March 7, 2017) – Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse junior attack Jack Carney (Dunbarton, N.H.) poured in a personal single game best six goals as the Ravens earned a 14-8 victory against non-conference opponent Georgian Court University on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Sodexo Field. The win, the Ravens first at home of the campaign, keeps them undefeated at 2-0 and the loss sends the Lions to 1-4.

Carney tallied three of his markers in the first half of play while the final three scores came during the second half. Two of his three tallies in the final 30 minutes came with a Lion player serving a penalty as the hosts were 2-2 on man up chances throughout the contest.

Sophomore attack Luke Tracy (Pelham, N.H.) racked up a hat trick (three goals) to go along with one assist. Sean Delea (Hampstead, N.H.) chipped in one score and a game-high two helpers while teammate Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) added two markers and an assist. On defense, team captain Robert Meyers (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) snagged a team-best six groundballs and caused a game-high three turnovers.

Reigning Northeast-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Week junior Connor Wacksman (Guilderland, N.Y.) improved to 2-0 on the year as he stopped eight shots, gobbled up two groundballs and caused one turnover.

For GCU Jeffrey Galatola notched a hat trick and netminder Austin Geissel made 15 saves in the setback.

Castorf opened the scoring by dangling in from the top of the crease then rifled home his shot. About 50 seconds later, Joe Palmeri (Lindenhurst, N.H.) passed the ball off to Nick Bradshaw (Westbury, N.Y.) who sniped a shot into the net from the left wing off a catch and shoot that increased FPU's lead to 2-0 in the early going.

Galatola manufactured two straight scores for the guests with the second marker coming from a spin move off a Raven defender from the close left wing to knot the game at two all. Delea then regained the lead for the Crimson and Grey by driving in from the right side and rocketed a shot into the cage from juts outside the right part of the crease.

The Ravens momentum carried into the second stanza as they tallied three of the next four scores to move ahead 6-3. With 23 seconds left Galatola bounced a shot past Wacksman to cut his squads deficit to two. Following a faceoff victory by Tyler Verdoni, Bradshaw stripped Verdoni of the rock which led to a groundball and successful clear by junior middie Grant Mello (Bedford, N.H.). Mello found Carney with a drop pass a few yards out from the center of the crease and Carney deposited a top shelf attempt with six ticks left to increase the Raven lead back to three, 7-4 at the intermission.

Carney and Ben Lassow (Mansfield, Conn.) each began the new half with scores assisted by Delea as Lassow spun off his defender and muscled his shot past the Lion goalie. Castorf followed by scoring his second gino of the game to push Pierce ahead 10-4.

Two consecutive scores off the sticks of Joe Ramirez and Ryder Verdoni brought the Raven lead to four, but Carney sniped a shot from the left slot on a man advantage and Tracy grabbed a loose ball and promptly bounced an attempt in with four seconds left to grow the Raven lead to six, 12-6 after 45 minutes of play.

In the fourth quarter each team scored two goals apiece as the Ravens were victorious by a 14-8 margin.

The Ravens have a brief layoff over spring break next week, but return to Sodexo Field on Saturday, March 18 at noon when they open up NE10 play versus Bentley.
