Late Rally Comes Up Just Short, Men’s Lacrosse Succumbs to SNHU, 14-13

RINDGE, N.H. (April 16, 2016) -- After the Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team fell behind early in the first quarter, neither a final push of six goals the final five minutes, nor sophomore midfielder Sean Delea's (Hampstead, N.H.) five goals were enough to come back, as the Ravens took the home loss against rival Southern New Hampshire in Saturday afternoon's Northeast-10 contest at Sodexo Field, 14-13.

The Ravens record falls to 4-7 overall and 3-6 in conference play, while the Penmen advance to a record of 6-5 overall and 6-3 in the NE-10.

The first quarter started with a SNHU turnover, and sophomore midfielder Brad Chapdelaine (Goffstown, N.H.) was there to ground the ball, with his pass to sophomore midfielder Louis Palumbo (Commack, N.Y.) setting up the first goal of the game. The Penmen answered with a pair of back-to-back goals to jump out front, 2-1.

The Ravens second goal was by junior attack Anthony D'Aprile (Smithtown, N.Y.), who was fed the ball by freshman attack Luke Tracy (Pelham, N.H.) from around the cage for the equalizer, making it 2-2 with three-and-a-half minutes to go in the first.

Franklin Pierce would fall short from there, while the Penmen poured in four more goals before the first quarter would expire, leaving the Ravens trailing 6-2 going into the second quarter.

Delea started the quarter with an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 6-3. The Ravens were able to hold the Penmen to two goals until the final minute of the half, when Delea scored another goal, this time behind his back, to make it an 8-4 deficit. The Penmen answered immediately to extend their lead, but Palumbo got the final say in the half with a goal at the 20-second mark to send the game into halftime at 9-5, in favor of SNHU.

The second half started with two Penmen goals by junior attack Keifer Heckman. Delea and Tracy connected for two Raven goals, making it 11-7. SNHU sophomore midfielder Dan Malave ended the third with two tallies to further extend the Penmen lead to 13-7 going into the final 15 minutes.

The Penmen got a man-up goal to start the final quarter, but the Ravens came back with a vengeance and poured in six goals over the final seven minutes of the game. Freshman midfielder Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) had a hat trick in the final stanza alone.

The Ravens were able to bring the game within one goal in the final minute, after Delea caught a pass from Tracy just outside the crease and sent it in behind Walsh, making it 14-13.

However, the Penmen increased their defensive presence and prevented the Ravens from tying the game, as Franklin Pierce fell, 14-13.

Leading the Ravens on Saturday was Delea with five goals and one assist for a six-point afternoon. Not far behind was Castorf, with three goals, and Palumbo, with two. Palumbo also collected six ground balls, while senior defender Malcolm Sutton (Hooksett, N.H.) caused three turnovers.

As a team, the Ravens took 44 shots, caused 10 turnovers and collected 24 ground balls. Sophomore keeper Connor Wacksman (Guilderland, N.Y.) took the loss today and his record now stands at 3-4, as he faced 28 shots on net and made 14 saves.

Leading the Penmen was senior attack Cameron Joyce with three goals, while Heckman had five ground balls. Junior keeper Tyler Walsh extended his record to 6-0, by facing 28 shots and making 15 saves.

The Ravens play next on Saturday, April 23, when they travel to Saint Rose for an NE-10 conference match-up at 1 p.m.
