Fourth-Quarter Effort Not Enough, Men’s Lacrosse Falls at Saint Anselm, 11-9

MANCHESTER, N.H. (March 29, 2016) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team put up seven unanswered goals in the second half, but the surge was not enough to come back from a first half deficit, and the Ravens fell to Saint Anselm, 11-9, on Tuesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at Grappone Stadium.

With the loss, the Ravens record falls to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while the Hawks advance their perfect record 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Northeast-10.

Ravens sophomore goalkeeper Connor Wacksman (Guilderland, N.Y.) took the loss on the day, with his record dropping to 3-2 after facing 22 shots on goal and making 11 saves on the day. Saint Anselm sophomore Lucas DeAngelo took the win to improve his record to 5-0 by facing 22 shots as well and making 13 saves.

In the first quarter, Franklin Pierce stayed silent as the Hawks took the lead by scoring five goals. Junior midfielder Mark Vitello had two goals on the quarter, leading to a 5-0 lead for Saint Anselm entering the second quarter.

The Ravens tallied two goals in the second quarter, as both sophomore attack Jack Carney (Dunbarton, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Sean Delea (Hampstead, N.H.) connected to put Franklin Pierce on the board going into the second half, though still trailing, 8-2.

In the third quarter, the Ravens held the Hawks to only three goals, though they were able to push the lead as high as 11-2. In the last second of the half, freshman attackman Luke Tracy (Pelham, N.H.) was able to slip a shot past DeAngelo to cut into the deficit, cutting it to 11-3 at halftime.

The Tracy goal started a Raven scoring surge, as they went for six unanswered fourth-quarter goals to bring the game within two scores. Freshman midfielder Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored two goals, while Carney notched two as well. Tracy and senior attackman Casey Burnett (Windham, N.H.) got in on the action with a goal each.

Despite the last-quarter efforts, the Ravens fell to the Hawks, 11-9.

Leading the Ravens on Tuesday was Carney with three goals and one assist, along with Castorf, who had two goals and four assists. Junior defender Robert Meyers (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) collected four ground balls. As a team, Ravens took 40 shots, won 14 faceoffs, made 16-of-23 clears, collected 29 ground balls and caused seven turnovers.

The Hawks took 41 shots, won eight faceoffs, corralled 31 ground balls, cleared 16-of-18 attempts and caused nine turnovers. Leading Saint Anselm was Vitello with three goals.

The Ravens return home on Saturday, April 2, when they play host to Le Moyne at noon in a conference match.
