Bio

Michals Doug Michals enters his first season as interim head coach with the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team in 2016-17. He previously spent the 2015-16 season with the team as its goaltending coach.

Michals joins the coaching staff at Franklin Pierce with more than a decade of experience as a hockey instructor in western Massachusetts. In the last 20 years, he has co-founded no fewer than four hockey programs, working primarily out of Auburndale, Mass.: Goalie Academy of Boston (1998), Michals Hockey Academy (2004), New England Pride Hockey Club (2011) and Middlesex Cross Ice Hockey (2012).

Among his more ambitious projects are the Michals Hockey Academy, which teaches life skills through the sport of ice hockey, and the New England Pride, a youth team for girls which has since spawned a 12-league team (the New England Girls Hockey League). In addition, Michals has spent time in the past as the goaltending coach for the Hershey Jr. Bears, Rivers Country Day School, and Nobles and Greenough School.

Michals was a four-year member of the men's ice hockey team at the University of Connecticut, where he played under late Ravens head coach Bruce Marshall. Michals was named the team's MVP in 1992-93, when he posted a 19-6-2 mark between the pipes for the Huskies. The 19 wins for a goaltender still stands tied for the program's single-season record, while his 38 career wins (38-14-5) ranks sixth in program annals.

A native of Westwood, Mass., Michals graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1995, with a bachelor's degree in sociology.
