HOOKSETT, N.H. (January 18, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team surrendered three power-play goals in eight chances on the road on Friday night at Southern New Hampshire. To make matters worse, the Ravens would strike only once in nine power-play opportunities of their own, on the way to a 5-1 loss to the Penmen in Northeast-10 Conference play at the Ice Den. Sophomore defenseman Max Kent dished out three assists in the win for SNHU.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 7-9-1 (2-4-1 NE10), while SNHU improves to 8-5-2 (4-2-1 NE10). The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at Franklin Pierce to wrap up the season series. Opening faceoff is set for 6:10 p.m. at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass.

A pair of power-play goals marked the only scoring of the first period and put Southern New Hampshire ahead for good on Friday night. Freshman forward Jake Cox opened the scoring with his team-leading sixth of the season at 12:12, off of an assist from Kent. Senior forward Artem Efimov-Barakov followed up with his third of the campaign at 19:35, while sophomore forward Kyle Galloway and Kent provided the assists.

Franklin Pierce was outshot 12-2 in the second period, but surrendered just one further goal. It was another power-play marker, as SNHU went 3-for-5 on the man-advantage through the first two periods. This time, senior forward Cole Stewart cashed in his third goal of the year, while Efimov-Barakov provided the lone helper.

The Penmen finally scored an even-strength goal at 10:06 of the third, to push the lead out to 4-0. It was the fifth of the season for senior forward Brett Strawn, with assists credited to Kent and freshman defenseman Phil Heisse.

Franklin Pierce scored its lone goal of the night at 18:20 of the third, on the power play and with the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker. Junior forward Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) struck for his team-leading eighth goal of the season, with freshman forward Chris Stevenson (Arvada, Colo.) and junior defenseman Mark Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass.) picking up the assists.

The Ravens kept the goaltender pulled after cutting the deficit to three, but it only resulted in a shorthanded, empty-net goal for SNHU, to create the 5-1 final. It would go as the fourth of the season for junior forward Ryan Spagnoli, unassisted, at 19:22.

Sophomore goaltender Ian Wallace (West Islip, N.Y.) finished with 33 saves against 37 shots and suffered the loss (5-8-1) in net for Franklin Pierce. In the opposite crease, it was 29 saves against 30 shots for junior Kurt Gutting (6-2-2), who picked up the win for SNHU.
