Penalty Kill Struggles as Men’s Ice Hockey Dropped by Connecticut College, 8-2, at Codfish Bowl

BOSTON (December 30, 2016) – A day after a furious third-period comeback for a tie, the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team found itself in a hole it could not begin to climb out of on Friday afternoon, falling 8-2 to Connecticut College in the consolation round of the 52nd Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament, hosted by Massachusetts Boston. Senior forward Ryan Mowery scored three times and added an assist to lead the way for Connecticut College, which went 5-for-10 on the power play on the day at Barry Ice Rink.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-8-1, while Connecticut College improves to 2-7-1. The Camels enjoyed a 42-20 advantage in shots on goal on the afternoon.

On Friday, Connecticut College poured in three first-period goals and never looked back en route to their victory by a half-dozen goals. Senior forward Joe Giordano opened the scoring at the 9:59 mark, putting home his first goal of the season, off an assist from sophomore defenseman Conner Judson. Mowery followed with his second goal of the season at 18:19, while freshman forward Ryan Petti's second of the campaign capped the opening stanza's scoring at 19:05 and would serve as the eventual game-winning goal.

Franklin Pierce got on the board at the 8:22 mark of the second period, as the two teams traded goals in the middle frame. Sophomore defenseman Jack Williams (Suffield, Conn.) tallied his first goal of the season, while senior forward Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior defenseman Taylor Fletcher (Leominster, Mass.) provided the assists.

Connecticut College had the answer just 2:04 later, at 10:26, on the first of five power-play markers in the second half of the game for the Camels. Freshman forward Jacob Moreau notched his second score of the year, to go with his first-period assist, to make it a 4-1 lead. Freshman defenseman Rory Garlasco and junior defenseman Mason Evans dished out the assists.

The third period turned into a goal bonanza in Boston. Franklin Pierce cut the gap to 4-2 at 4:42, as junior forward Jonathan Haun (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored his fourth goal of the season, unassisted, in a delayed-penalty situation. Connecticut College followed with four consecutive power-play tallies to break the game open and create the 8-2 final. Mowery struck at 7:27 and again at 12:01 to finish off his hat trick. In between, he assisted on the second goal of the season for sophomore forward Jake Farabee, who found the net at 10:08. Freshman forward Jeff Thompson capped the day's scoring at the 12:49 mark with an unassisted marker, his fifth of the campaign.

Senior goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) played just the first period in net for Franklin Pierce, and took the loss (6-8-1) after surrendering three goals on 19 shots. He gave way to fellow senior Austin Christopher (Winthrop, Maine), who made 18 saves against 23 shots the rest of the way. At the other end of the ice, freshman netminder Avery Gobbo (1-2-1) made 18 stops against 20 shots to pick up the win for Connecticut College.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 6, when they travel to Assumption for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 5:35 p.m. at Buffone Rink in Worcester, Mass.
