Indelicato Brothers Key Men’s Ice Hockey in 6-3 Win Over Assumption

WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 12, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team got four goals from a pair of brothers on Saturday night, as sophomore forwards Nate Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass.) and Nick Indelicato (Pembroke, Mass.) struck twice each at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. The former added an assist along the way as well, as his 2-1-3 outing led the way in the barnburner, with the Ravens posting a 6-3 win over Assumption in Northeast-10 Conference play. Junior forward Cam Laughlin scored twice in defeat for Assumption.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 3-2-0 (1-1-0 Northeast-10), while Assumption falls to 2-3-0 (0-2-0 Northeast-10).

The Ravens scored the only goal of the first period on Saturday night, at the 14:33 mark. It was the one goal of the night which both Indelicato brothers figured in on, as Nate took the original shot from the point. His shot was knocked down by the defense, but the puck fell in the slot for Nick Indelicato, who had the quick finish from between the hash marks for his third goal of the season.

The game turned into a goal bonanza after the first intermission, as the two sides combined for eight goals over the final two frames. Special teams was the name of the game in the second period, beginning with a power-play goal at the 4:55 mark for Assumption, to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore defenseman Matt Damelio cashed in his first collegiate goal by weaving a shot through traffic from the middle of the blue line. Sophomore defenseman Dante Tomassini provided the assist with a feed from the left circle.

Franklin Pierce reclaimed the lead less than a minute later, with a power-play goal of its own at the 5:43 mark, on a tic-tac-toe passing play. The play started with senior defenseman Alex Schleper (Sutton, Mass.) at the right point, and he fired a pass across the ice to sophomore defenseman Blaise Kilroy (Spring City, Pa.) in the left circle. Kilroy quickly fed a pass back across the slot and hit Nick Indelicato at the right post for the easy finish on his second goal of the night.

Assumption drew level again, with a 5-on-3 goal at the 7:11 mark, to make it 2-2. From the right point, junior forward Brian Farrell fired a pass across the slot and to Laughlin outside the left post. The latter had the one-time finish for his second goal of the campaign, while freshman defenseman Robert Roache added an assist as well.

The Ravens claimed a 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission with a shorthanded marker at the 15:42 mark. Junior forward Blake Manginell (Troy, Mich.) worked the puck to junior forward Jonathan Haun (Buffalo, N.Y.), who led a 2-on-2 into the offensive end steaming down the left side. Haun crashed hard to the net with the puck, and was ultimately able to poke it past Assumption senior goaltender Nick Commesso for his second goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce struck twice in less than two minutes near the middle of the third period to surge to a 5-2 lead. First, at the 8:56 mark, the Ravens generated a 2-on-1 across the offensive blue line immediately after killing off a penalty. Freshman forward Kyle Gosselin (Haverhill, Mass.) led the play down the right side, with Nate Indelicato joining the rush on the left side. Gosselin feathered a pass into the slot for Indelicato, who snapped a shot into the left side of the net for his second goal of the year.

Just 1:47 later, Nate Indelicato would strike again, burying a shot from the right circle to cap off a rush up the ice by the Ravens. Gosselin set it up with a pass across the slot, while freshman forward Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) added an assist as well, at the 10:43 mark.

Assumption closed the gap to 5-3 with a power-play tally at the 12:58 mark. Laughlin took a shot from the left circle, which would turn into his second goal of the night. Franklin Pierce junior goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) got a big piece of the shot, but the puck still got behind him and trickled over the line to pull the Greyhounds within a pair.

Franklin Pierce put the game on ice at the 15:51 mark, by cashing in with its second power-play goal of the night (2-for-5) to create the 6-3 final. From the left-wing half boards, freshman forward James Morrissey (West Haven, Conn.) sent the puck into the high slot for freshman forward Matthew Toombs (Pleasanton, Calif.). Toombs got everything into a one-time shot from there and cleanly beat Commesso for his first career goal. Senior defenseman Taylor Fletcher (Leominster, Mass.) added an assist on the play as well.

McGuckin (3-2-0) finished with 33 saves against 36 shots on goal to pick up the win between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. Commesso (0-2-0) stopped 22 of 28 shots and took the loss in net for Assumption.

The Ravens return to the ice on Sunday, Nov. 13, when they travel to Daniel Webster for a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Conway Arena in Nashua, N.H.
